ERes Resources for Students
What is ERes?
ERes is an electronic reserve program maintained by Gutman Library. Your instructor is using ERes to distribute course documents or to make course readings available over the Internet. This page provides some basic information to help you use ERes. If you have any additional questions or comments please send them to the ERes Administrator.
Use this link to connect to ERes at anytime.
ERes General Information
- Access ERes from either the Gutman Library Home Page or connect to it directly at http://eres.philau.edu.
- In the campus computer labs, you will find an ERes icon on the desktop. This will create a direct connection to ERes. To use ERes in the computer labs you must have a Philadelphia University computer users account. If you do not have one, you can obtain assistance in getting one by contacting the OIT Help Desk on the 2nd floor of Search Hall (helpdesk@philau.edu, 215-951-4648).
- You can use any web browser, but the best results will be obtained by using Netscape 4.0 or higher, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, or Apple Safari 1.0 or higher.
- Most ERes pages are password protected. You must obtain the password from your instructor. The librarians and staff members of Gutman Library DO NOT keep a record of individual course page passwords.
- ERes pages can contain several types of documents:
- ERes is a campus network supported system, but it can be accessed from any computer that connects to the Internet. Users of Internet Services Providers such as AOL, MSN, or other ISPs will experience no obstacles in connecting to ERes.
a) Microsoft Office Documents: Instructors can put Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access documents on an ERes page. To properly access any of these documents you must have the appropriate software on your computer, in which case the software will automatically open when you click on the ERes document link. Once the document is loaded, you can print or save the document as regularly done. All Office documents will work in campus computer labs.
b) Scanned Articles: Instructors can scan articles and post them on an ERes page. When you click on one of these scanned articles your browser will open a new window. There are devices that allow you to navigate the pages of the document. You can also click on a button to print the scanned article.
c) Text Files: Instructors can download or create plain ASCII text files. Depending on your browser, it may be read in the browser window or a simple text editor may be opened by your browser to enable you to read the document.
d) Image Files: To view an image, click on the link and your browser will open a new window in which the image will be shown.
e) PDF Files: Instructors can scan documents into the Adobe Acrobat PDF format. In order to read these documents you MUST have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. All lab and library computers have the Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have the Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can download a free copy and install it on your computer.
For detailed instruction on finding and retrieving documents for your course in ERes, review the ERes Guide for Students (html - pdf).
