Gutman Library can help!

Ablah Library front plaza

These departments, collections and areas are located on the Main Floor of the library (Floor 1).

Circulation Desk: This is the place to check out and return books, borrow a laptop, pay fines, and more! The Circulation Desk is immediately to your left, as you enter the library.

Reserve Desk: The reserve department has materials set aside for Philadelphia University students to use, such as readings or books for a specific class. The reserve desk also has multi-media items for certain classes (CDs, videos and DVDs) that can be played on the computers in the library. Just ask for a set of headphones, if you don't have your own.

Reference Desk: Diagonally across from the Circulation / Reserve Desk is the Reference Desk. Go here when you need help finding information in the library. A staff member at this desk will help you find books and other materials, help you use the library catalog, and suggest good sources of information to answer your question.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL): If Gutman Library doesn't have the book or article you need, ILL can often get it for you from another library. You can order the materials online and even receive full-text articles electronically . Our ILL department is located in the area behind the Reference Desk.

Reference Collection: Located across from the Reserve Desk, this collection contains books such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, and other forms of specialized reference information. These books do not circulate.

Current Periodicals: These are the newest copies (usually within the last 12 months) of the magazines, journals, and newspapers the library carries. Turn to your right as you enter the library, and enter the Current Periodicals area.

These departments and collections are located
on the Lower Level (Ground Floor).

Media Services: Staff at the Media Services Desk can help you with printers, photocopiers, software questions, and more.

Microforms: Journals, newspapers, magazines and other printed materials are sometimes transferred to photographic film. Each page is photographed and put on rolls of film (called microfilm) or small sheets of film (called microfiche). Microforms must be viewed on special machines, called reader/printers. We have two reader/printers, which are networked to the printers in the library, and also to your home directory on the network. You can both save each page of an article that you need to your home directory and print out each page directly from the microforms, using the reader/printer.

Special Collections: This department archives materials including rare books, photographs, swatch books and more. These materials provide historical information about  Philadelphia University, textile history, and the textile manufacturing history of the Philadelphia area. Visit our Digital Collections to see historical postcards of Philadelphia, textile trade cards, and information about campus buildings.
