Services for Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff of Philadelphia University are encouraged to use the resources of Gutman Library. Here are some of the services we offer:

BORROWING LIBRARY MATERIAL
Books and other materials may be borrowed and returned at the Check-Out desk on the main floor of the library. To ensure their availability, reference books, magazines and journals do not leave the library. You must register as a patron at the Circulation Desk. A barcode will be placed on your Philadelphia University card. The loan period for faculty and staff is the semester.  Materials may be renewed if no one is waiting for them.

RESEARCH SERVICES
The librarians are available to both conduct (within means) and assist with research requests. Guidance in choosing research tools and databases, advice for Internet searching, and research support are available on request. Faculty should consult their departmental liaisons. Staff may also seek, on a more limited basis, research assistance, and should contact any of the librarians.

LIBRARY LIAISON SERVICE
Each librarian at Gutman Library is assigned to serve as the liaison to a University School. Each liaison is available to personally assist faculty members with any library-related matter or question. From recommending book purchases to arranging for an instruction session or for help with research assignments or academic research, contact your library liaison. They are:

School of Architecture  - Michael Krasulski
School of Business Administration - Contact any liaison for instruction; Kathy Mulroy for collection input School of Design and Media - Michael Krasulski
School of Engineering and Textiles - Barbara Lowry

School of Liberal Arts - Jordana Shane
School of Science and Health - Stan Gorski

JOURNALS / MAGAZINES
Current journals and magazines are located on the main floor to the right of the main entrance. Virtually all of our current print journals and magazines are searchable in PhilaFIND, the library's online catalog. You may also use JournalList, an alphabetical listing of over 7,000 electronic journals found in our various databases. Journals and magazines do not circulate.

RESERVE COLLECTION
RESERVE MATERIALS should be sent to Louise McShane (*2840) c/o library reserve desk..  Reserve materials are most often personal copies or library-owned copies of books, AV materials or single or multiple copies of photocopied articles. These materials are kept at the circulation desk for the length of one semester unless otherwise requested.

Reserve items are for use in the building for a four hour borrowing period. Reserve materials do not leave the library unless the instructor releases them through Louise either by phone or e-mail.

When placing material on reserve, please allow as much time as possible. A minimum of 48 hours is required for processing. . Reserve materials are listed in the library catalog.

Many instructors also make reserve readings electronically available on ERes. For more information, click on the ERes link.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN
Faculty and staff may borrow materials that the Gutman Library does not own from other libraries. This service is free and is made possible by reciprocal agreements with neighboring libraries. Please allow a minimum of two weeks for requests. For more information, see our ILL information page.

PHOTOCOPIES and COMPUTER PRINTING
Photocopy machines are available in the copy room on the main floor of the library.

All public computer workstations in the library print to a central printing stations found on the main, upper and lower levels. Color printing is available at $.49 per page.

Faculty and staff may charge the cost of printing or copying to a budget account. More information on this is avaialble at the Reference Desk.

COMPUTERS
PCs and MACs are available on all levels of the library. Gutman Library also loans laptop computers for in-house use - ask at the Circulation Desk. Faculty can inquire with Media Services about the loan of a laptop for use outside the library.

GROUP STUDY ROOMS
The library has six group study rooms that accommodate two to six people. These rooms are equipped with table and chairs, power outlets and blackboards. Faculty who need a private place for study and discussion may request a key at the Check-Out desk. These rooms are available on a first come, first served basis and a current ID card is required.

In addition, faculty may reserve Room 101 for class preparation or student meetings. Room 101 has a 42" flat panel plasma monitor.

Other rooms are also available to faculty for meetings or private conferences. For more information, go to our Facilities page.

MICROFORMS
Many library materials, such as newspapers, magazines, college catalogs are kept on microfilm or microfiche. Most microforms are located on the ground floor of the library in the Media Services area. Coin operated reader-printers for both formats are available for student and faculty use. One microform reader makes it possible to both e-mail and computer print any microform image.
