Services for Faculty and Staff
Faculty and staff of Philadelphia University are encouraged
to use the resources of Gutman Library. Here are some of the services we offer:
BORROWING LIBRARY MATERIAL
Books and other materials may be borrowed and returned at the Check-Out
desk on the main floor of the library. To ensure their availability, reference
books, magazines and journals do not leave the library. You must register
as a patron at the Circulation Desk. A barcode will be placed on your
Philadelphia University card. The loan period for faculty and staff is the semester.
Materials may be renewed if no one is
waiting for them.
RESEARCH SERVICES
The librarians are available to both conduct (within
means) and assist with research requests. Guidance in choosing research tools
and databases, advice for Internet searching, and research support are
available on request. Faculty should consult their departmental liaisons.
Staff may also seek, on a more limited basis, research assistance, and should
contact any of the librarians.
LIBRARY LIAISON SERVICE
Each librarian at Gutman Library is assigned to serve as
the liaison to a University School. Each liaison is available to personally
assist faculty members with any library-related matter or question. From
recommending book purchases to arranging for an instruction session or for
help with research assignments or academic research, contact your library
liaison. They are:

JOURNALS / MAGAZINES
Current journals and magazines are located on the main floor
to the right of the main entrance. Virtually all of our current print journals
and magazines are searchable in PhilaFIND, the library's online catalog. You may also use JournalList, an
alphabetical listing of over 7,000 electronic journals found in our various
databases. Journals and magazines do not circulate.
RESERVE COLLECTION
RESERVE MATERIALS should be sent to Louise McShane (*2840)
c/o library reserve desk.. Reserve
materials are most often personal copies or library-owned copies of books, AV materials or
single or multiple copies of photocopied articles. These materials are kept
at the circulation desk for the length of one semester unless otherwise
requested.
Reserve items are for use in the building for a four hour
borrowing period. Reserve materials do
not leave the library unless the instructor releases them through Louise
either by phone or e-mail.
When
placing material on reserve, please allow as much time as possible. A
minimum of 48 hours is required for processing. . Reserve
materials are listed in the library catalog.
Many instructors also make reserve
readings electronically available on ERes. For more information, click on the ERes link.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN
Faculty and staff may borrow materials that the Gutman Library does not own
from other libraries. This service is free and is made possible by reciprocal
agreements with neighboring libraries. Please allow a minimum of two weeks for

PHOTOCOPIES and COMPUTER
PRINTING
Photocopy machines are available in the copy room on the main floor of the
library.
All public computer workstations
in the library print to a central printing stations found on the main, upper and lower levels. Color
printing is available at $.49 per page.
Faculty and staff may charge the
cost of printing or copying to a budget account. More information on this is avaialble at the Reference Desk.
COMPUTERS
PCs and MACs are available on all levels of the library. Gutman Library also loans laptop computers for in-house
use - ask at the Circulation Desk. Faculty can inquire with Media Services
about the loan of a laptop for use outside the library.
GROUP STUDY ROOMS
The library has six group study rooms that accommodate two to six people.
These rooms are equipped with table and chairs, power outlets and
blackboards. Faculty who need a private place for study and
discussion may request a key at the Check-Out desk. These rooms are
available on a first come, first served basis and a current ID card is
required.
In addition, faculty may reserve Room 101 for class preparation or student
meetings. Room 101 has a 42" flat panel plasma monitor.

MICROFORMS
Many library materials, such as newspapers, magazines, college catalogs are
kept on microfilm or microfiche. Most microforms are located on the ground
floor of the library in the Media Services area.
Coin operated reader-printers for both formats are available for student and
faculty use. One microform reader makes it possible to both
e-mail and computer print any microform image.
SCANNING SERVICE
Multiple scanners are found throughout the
library on every building level. Faculty and staff
can save scanned images
directory to one's home directory.
FOOD AND BEVERAGES
Smoking, food and beverages are not permitted in the Gutman Library. Please
help us maintain a clean and pleasant environment by following these
guidelines.
