Q:
What students can
take online courses? SCROLL DOWN FOR WELCOME MESSAGE >>
Q: How do I take an
online course?
Q: Where can I find
information
regarding course policies,
registration,
add/drop,
withdrawing, cost,
textbooks, etc.?
Q: Who can I contact to get additional help?
A:
Students
enrolled in the
graduate business
foundation courses,
those designated
with “MF” will be
taking these courses
online. The primary
reason for using the
online format is
that it allows
people to progress
at a faster,
self-paced rate. The
objective is to
allow students to
enroll in the
graduate MBA classes
sooner than possible
in the past. We
realize how busy
everyone is, and one
major advantage of
the online format is
that it provides
access to courses
when and where it is
most convenient for
you.
Philadelphia University has been providing distance learning for many years
through
http://www.philau.org, but only recently have we added the foundation MBA courses to the online offering. The initial development and testing stage lasted 18 months and we believe we have worked out many of the 'bugs,' but as with any online course, we are constantly changing and upgrading content.
This introduction is
part of a
"frequently asked
question" page that
we update regularly
based on the
questions you and
other students have
raised. Hopefully we
can answer many of
your questions and
address your
concerns here.
Textbooks: The
textbooks are
standard texts in
most cases, other
material will be
provided by the
faculty, and current
readings may require
subscribing to a
newspaper or journal
(or which can be
accessed at the
Philadelphia
University library).
Information about
the required and
recommended readings
for each class and
other basic
information is also
located on the web
(click <here>
for MF course
information). You
may purchase the
texts through the
Philadelphia
University store, or
through another
source. The director
of the store, Ms.
Shirley Landis will
be happy to assist
you. You may contact
her by phone
(215-951-2717), fax
(215.951.2667) or
e-mail.
Start and end date:
You will be provided
with a username and
password that will
allow you to begin
accessing the
courses for which
you have registered.
The start and end
dates for online
courses coincide
with traditional
classes. Please
refer to the
campus calendar.
Some of the material
is 'dated' and
access will be
limited to specific
times and dates, for
example, exams can
only be accessed
once and during
certain periods set
by the faculty
member teaching the
course.
Faculty contact: You
will always be able
to correspond with
the faculty via
e-mail. Some faculty
will also provide
chat rooms, a
synchronous method
of communication
('live chat'). You
may also call or fax
the faculty. Online
learning encourages
frequent contact
between faculty and
student.
Complaints: Hopefully there are none, but realistically we expect problems to surface.
Your first best means of finding answers to any
questions you may have regarding online course
delivery is to contact the faculty member whose
class you are or will be taking.
I am
ultimately responsible for making sure the online format works properly.
Ideally, you are able to work out difficulties with the course faculty, but if not, do not hesitate to call me (215-951-2819), fax something to me (215.951.2652), send me an e-mail, or come to my office (map to Gibbs Hall).
Again, the reason
for providing
coursework online is
to make learning
more accessible and
convenient. That is
the goal and it is
my hope that we
succeed beyond your
expectations.
Best regards,
Lloyd Russow,
Associate Dean
School of Business
Administration
