About Safe Zone
Philadelphia University strives to improve the climate for its GLBT population and we are proud of accomplishments that include increased educational and campus programming for students, domestic partners benefit package for employees and attracting more employees who openly identify as GLBT. However, given that harassment and other homophobic acts are reported each year, there is still evidence of homophobia on campuses nationwide, including ours.
The PhilaU Safe Zone program is designed to support the University’s anti-discrimination policy, which in turn is based on the premise that each person is entitled to a comfortable work and study environment regardless of race or ethnicity, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, or social class.
At the end of each workshop, participants will be asked to choose whether or not to identify as an ally--that is, a supportive and trustworthy person who can offer support to GLBT students and employees. Increasing the visibility of allies on campus will speak volumes of our effort to best serve all of our students and promote an inclusive campus environment. If your schedule allows, and you would like to help advance our work in this area, I would encourage you to attend the upcoming Safe Zone program.
