THE SEAL AND THE SHIELD

From its founding in 1884, Philadelphia University has been a national leader in textile education. Today, programs encompass textiles, architecture, business, fashion, design, health and the sciences. The seal represents our first programs in the chemistry of dyeing and finishing, and mechanics of textile manufacturing.

SHUTTLE: A boat-shaped
device that carries filling yarns through the warp shed in the weaving
process.

SKEIN: A continuous
strand of yarn or cord of any desired length in the form of a
collapsible coil.

RETORT: A glass
apparatus used for distilling.
