In considering the diverse and changing contexts of today’s professional practitioner, the Architecture Program recognizes that design professionals require an understanding of economic, technical, and aesthetic issues within a complex social, cultural, and environmental framework. The mission of the Program is to prepare students to be creative, independent thinkers and innovative problem solvers, combining professional skills with a broad general education.
The Program encourages students to question as they develop critical design skills, exploring process as much as product in searching for solutions to issues in the built environment. Emphasis is placed on creative excellence, balanced with the fundamental knowledge and skill required for meaningful contributions to design. The Program encourages students to establish a “foundation for success, life-long learning, and active citizenship,” as stewards of a sustainable society.
The Bachelor of Architecture is a professional degree earned over a five year course of study. After an interdisciplinary foundation shared with other Programs, the curriculum continues with more advanced technical and professional courses, supporting studio design projects of increasing complexity and scope. The Architecture program has an established study abroad program with the American University of Rome which many students in the fourth year elect to join.
In the fifth year, systems synthesis and collaboration are emphasized in addressing complex urban/suburban and theoretical problems, encouraging independent research, programming and critical analysis in establishing the theoretical basis for design work. Thesis and faculty-directed capstone studio options are offered during the final semester. The thesis option requires an approved thesis proposal, though capstone instruction also emphasizes independent research, programming and critical analysis in establishing the theoretical basis for design work. Both options require comprehensive designs that articulate the physical, spiritual and theoretical objectives and demonstrate full resolution of a project.
The Program is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).
