Thank you for partnering with the Career Services Center for the resume writing assignment.  With your help, we aim to teach students an essential professional skill -- crafting a professional resume.  As part of this skill set, we require each student to upload a resume to the Center's online job posting system, CareerLink, and to receive an approval message from a staff member in the Center.

Each resume that is submitted to CareerLink is reviewed by a counselor and is either approved or not approved based on its content, format and appearance.  Once a resume have been approved, students are free to apply for internship and full-time positions and employers will be able to view electronic versions of their resumes.

Because employers will be viewing students' documents, we will be very closely reviewing the resumes of your students.  We do this because we want to be sure that they are uploading resumes that best market and represent their skills, their accomplishments and the university overall as well.

Resume AssignmentFaculty Instructions/Guidelines:

  1. Contact Trish Shafer in the Career Services Center to schedule a time for a Career Services representative to present resume writing and the use of CareerLink.

    * For the '09-'10 academic year, classes can be scheduled during the following two, 2-week segments:

    A)
During the weeks of August 24th through September 4th  -or-
    B)
During the weeks of October 26th through November 6th

  2. Distribute the Student Instructions and reiterate the request that students bring a copy of their resume to class on that day.

Documents to distribute to your students: the Bad Resume, the Resume Bullet Worksheet

  3. Reinforce with students the resume deadline:

    A) If your class is scheduled during the time period of August 24th-September 4th, students will have to forward you their approval message by NOON on SEPTEMBER 23rd

    B) If your class is scheduled during the time period of October 26th-November 6th, students will have to forward you their approval message by NOON on NOVEMBER 24th

*Due to a shortage of staff in the fall in the Career Services Center, the above deadlines will help us manage the time frames during which we'll have a large amount of resumes to review in the CareerLink system.

After the in-class presentation:

Once a student has uploaded his or her resume to CareerLink, he or she may have to wait up to 48 hours before receiving an email about the status of their document.   Students whose resumes are approved and not approved receive the same email.

A "not approved" message indicates that the resume is not fit for employer's eyes and they will either receive feedback on how to amend the document or instructions to follow-up with a Career Services staff member.

Following is the message that student's receive once their document has been reviewed:

Dear [fullname],

The document you recently uploaded to CareerLink ([document_type], [document_label]) has been reviewed by our staff and is [review_status].

IF YOUR RESUME HAS BEEN APPROVED: You are now able to apply for positions using this document.

IF YOUR RESUME HAS NOT BEEN APPROVED:
If there are no comments listed in the "Comments" section below, substantive changes are needed: please contact the Career Services Center at 215.951.2930 to make an appointment with a counselor.
