TIP OF THE WEEK

Employers are using social networking sites like LinkedIn to get a better view of candidates.  In Dan Schawbel's recent article 5 Reasons Why Your Online Presence Will Replace Your Resume in 10 Years, Dan writes "Employers are reviewing your profiles to see what kind of person you are outside of work, who you’re connected to, and how you present yourself. Each gives clues to how well you can fit into the corporate culture. When employees don’t fit in the culture, there is turnover, and it costs the organization thousands of dollars."

Is your online brand hurting you or helping you? Get an objective opinion from someone in Career Services. Schedule an appointment to have your LinkedIn Profile reviewed and watch this video for advice on how to make sure your Facebook page doesn't sabotage your job search (Scroll down to videos and click on Facebook).

SOCIAL NETWORKING:

Getting Started on LinkedIn:  visit LinkedIn where you'll find excellent videos on how to create a profile and learn how to connect with people and build your network.  Go to the "More" tab, click Learning Center and then the Students User Guide.  Create your free account today and get busy on this global, professional networking site.

Building Your Professional Brand: create a dynamic summary and specialities section in your profile that compels the reader to learn more about you and conveys your top skills and interests.  Click here for a worksheet to help you write your professional Brand Statement and here for examples of how your Brand Statement changes from freshmen to senior year.

Groups in LinkedIn:  hang out (virtually) with like-minded people who work in the field you're trying to enter.  You can communicate freely with fellow group members, contribute to conversations of interest to all and get advice from professionals in your field.  If you find someone on LinkedIn you'd like to contact but can't because you're not connected, scroll down to the bottom of their profile, join a group they're in and email that person through your shared membership in that group!
