TIP OF THE WEEK

LEVERAGE TEMP, CONTRACT OR FREELANCE RECRUITING

While permanent hiring is on the rise, temporary, contract and freelance employees are still in demand and can be an excellent entry point into an organization or career path.  When permanent positions become available, the temp/freelance/contract employees tend to get a first-look since they've been in the department or role and their performance can be evaluated.

Aligning yourself with an agency that works with your industry of choice is your first step. Be sure to attend Leveraging Staffing Agency & 3rd Party Recruiters in Your Job Search: Employer Panel and Fair (details below) scheduled for April 7th to learn how to initiate contact with a firm and to meet reps in attendance.

EVENTS & UPCOMING DEADLINES

THIS WEEK:

  • DesignExpo: Thursday, March 31st, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. Gallagher Center
Junior and senior design majors, 4th & 5th Year architecture and landscape architecture majors and graduate design students are invited to attend - check your inbox for your invitation. Pre-registration is expected and ends tonight at midnight.  With over 70 employers attending, you don't want to miss this opportunity.  Once you register, important details about sign-ups on March 30th will be emailed.  For a list of employers who have registered to attend, click here.  Check back frequently as new employers register almost daily.

LOOKING AHEAD:

  • Digital Resume:  Tuesday, April 5th, 11:00 - 12:15, Search 307 Computer Lab
Leave this workshop with a digital resume you can send to employers. Digital resumes (also called ePortfolios) allow you to provide more information to employers than a one-page resume allows. Share writing samples, images from design projects, evidence of skills and more. Seating is limited to 20 and participants should bring a copy of their resume (helpful). You MUST pre-register on CareerLink by April 1st so an account can be created for you.
  • Leveraging Staffing Agency & 3rd Party Recruiters in Your Job Search: Employer Panel and Fair:
    Thursday, April 7th, 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m., Downs Auditorium
While hiring is up in certain industries, companies are still using temp and freelance workers to meet their staffing needs. Attend this session to get the inside scoop on how to work with agencies and recruiters to uncover more employment options. Bring resumes and introduce yourself to the representatives!

RESOURCE CORNER

JOB SEARCH TOOLS:

Job Search Organizer:  Many failed job searches start and end with a lack of organization.  Most people can’t devote 8 hours a day to a job search (nor is that advisable!) so your search is conducted in fits-and-starts.  By tracking information you’ve researched, conversations you’ve conducted and documents you’ve sent, you’ll be able to pick up exactly where you left off when “life” distracts you from your search.  Check out the job search organizer tutorial then download the Job Search Organizer to start customizing it to your needs.

Company Research:  Demonstrating thorough knowledge about the company you’re targeting, the industry, and their competitors goes a long way in a down economy - lack of research on the position or company you're interviewing with is a frequent complaint from recruiters!  Employers want to know you’re interested in working for them, specifically, rather than simply needing a job.  Demonstrating your knowledge of the organization and the role to which you’re applying starts with your cover letter and carries through to the interview.  Invest time in research to differentiate yourself from your competition. Check out this resource for tips on effective company research.
