How to Prepare for a Career Fair
Career fairs can be great. In fact they can be the most effective use of a student’s time to achieve success in a job search. However, most students do not take advantage of such opportunities for a number of reasons including (the biggest) fear, in-the-moment thinking, and busy schedules. Notice not being concerned about finding a job or internship was not on that list. So don’t leave Career Fairs to chance, if you want to put yourself ahead of the competition you will want to review the timeline listed below.
What to do BEFORE a Career Fair
- Prepare a “30 second spot” introduction this includes (who you are, what your currently doing, and why your interested in talking to them)
- Research the companies attending if possible
- Generate a list of questions you want answered
- Dress for your industry and to impress, if unsure contact Career Services
- Have your resume reviewed by a Career Services staff member
- Strategize your time
- Prepare answers to questions about your resume and skills
- Practice offering a strong, confident handshake
- Make any travel arrangements or map-out where you will be going if unfamiliar
What to do DURING a Career Fair
- Pick up any floor map or directions to company locations
- Approach the recruiter of the companies you have targeted
- Introduce yourself utilizing the “30 sec. spot”, and SHAKE HANDS
- During conversation, highlight any skills experience you have had
- Communicate any current events regarding the company through the conversation
- Watch your conversation length, don’t go too long.
- Give the recruiter a copy of your resume
- Ask for a business card and the appropriate way to follow up
- Make a quick note regarding conversation on business card
What to do AFTER a Career Fair
- Track who you talked to and about what, plan to follow up with each.
- Send thank you notes within 24 hours
