Case Competition

A major retailer partnered with two senior business capstone courses to launch a 48-hour case competition. Students were introduced to the organization at their corporate headquarters on Friday and worked throughout the weekend to develop a solution to the case. All teams presented on Sunday evening and the top four teams presented their findings to executives on Monday night. The top four teams were awarded cash prizes and the organization sponsored the entire weekend! Not only did this event help the retailer increase their brand on-campus but they hired four students directly from this event for full-time corporate-level positions.

Brand Week

Career Services worked with a speciality retailer to design a "Brand Week". During a specific week in the Fall, the retailer was on-campus delivering presentations, conducting on-campus interviews, displaying product, running a visual merchandising competition and interacting with students across all academic disciplines (not just design). 

Virtual Fashion Career Fair

Each November fashion employers participate in this no cost event to recruit talent for their internships, entry-level and experienced needs. This November will be the fithth year for the Virtual Fashion Career Fair except this year, employers will also have the opportunity to interact with students via LinkedIn. When employers register for the event, they will be invited to join a sub-group of PhilaU Connect (the LinkedIn group for alums of Philadelphia University). Research has shown that students want to network during career fairs (vs. just gathering information or brochures about the company) and students view LinkedIn as the appropriate and professional forum for this interaction (vs. Facebook, Twitter).

Alumni Networking Reception

A large online retailer with numerous Philadelphia University alums organized a tour of their office, presentations by HR and executives as well as a networking reception for alums and current students. This was a great way to use alums as an extension of the recruiting team and invite strong talent for a tour. It was more than an open house. Students were pre-selected to attend and this organization only invited the students who they were truly interested in recruiting for internships and full-time roles.

Spring Break Industry Road Trips

Over Spring Break, Career Services organizes a trip for pre-selected students to visit company locations in NYC and Philadelphia. Students must apply to attend the two days of employers visits. The third day involves a reflection piece and professional development workshop delivered by Career Services. Rethinking Career Fairs - Send the Best Representative

According to the Scott Resource Group http://www.scottresourcegroup.com/, students are looking to network at career fairs vs. gather information/brochures about the company. Ideally, they want to have their specific questions answered about the hiring process and the career opportunities. Therefore, we recommend sending an HR representative as well as a hiring manager to the event. The hiring manager should be trained in the HR process and the HR representative should know specific details about all the job responsibilities. According to new research, students are using career fairs as a way to identify contacts to connect with after the event. Their experience at the career fair has a direct impact on their impression of the company.
