Establishing a Mentor / Mentee "Agreement"

When a relationship is being explored or once it is agreed to, have a formal conversation around mutual expectations.  Suggestions for that conversation might include:

WHAT WE MUTUALLY AGREE TO:

  • Provide open feedback
  • Respond to emails /calls within a specified period of time (24 hrs?  48 hrs? be realistic about your ability and commitment to respond)
  • Provide 24 hours notice of any meeting cancellation;  discuss parameters around missed appointments in general
  • Commit to the mentoring relationship and to established goals
  • Formally define personal goals and areas of productive exploration
  • Make time to meet regularly and communicate between meetings based on an established and agreed-upon timeline

AS A MENTOR I AGREE TO:

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Commit to my mentee’s goals and areas of exploration on their agenda
  • Share my expertise, experience and network connections in the best interest of my mentee

AS A MENTEE I AGREE TO:

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Set goals and utilize my mentor’s time and expertise productively
  • Commit to the goals and areas of exploration I set for myself
  • Prepare and communicate meeting agendas in advance of meeting my mentor
  • Be open to hearing constructive criticism or feedback
  • Act on guidance provided by my mentor and communicate updates and impact of that guidance to my mentor
