Establishing Communication Guidelines

It is important to establish communication guidelines with your mentor and commit to them.  Topics to discuss:

  • Preferred method of communication – email or phone
  • Frequency of meetings and email updates – if you’re meeting once a month for 30 minutes, send two additional short (2-3 paragraph) emails between meetings to keep your mentor informed of any news, thoughts or stories.
  • Will meetings be in person, over the phone, using Skype or a combination?
  • Duration of each meeting
  • Response time expectations to any communication sent or received

Remember to include your signature at the bottom of every email you send (don’t assume your mentor has your contact information memorized) and watch all grammar, spelling, and email etiquette
