Reaching Out to a Mentor

Given the informal nature of the identification process, it is the role of the mentee to reach out to a potential mentor to explore a relationship.

Your first outreach will be via LinkedIn.  Once you’ve identified an alumnus in the PhilaU Mentor Connect subgroup, click “Send A Message” (see Researching Alumni on PhilaU Connect for specific instructions).  Below is a sample email you could  send:

Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name:

After researching profiles on the PhilaU Mentor Connect LinkedIn group, I am interested in exploring a mentor/mentee relationship with you.  As a (your major here) at Philadelphia University with an interest in pursuing (your goal – graduate school, a career in X), your educational background and career path are quite interesting to me.

I’d welcome the opportunity to meet in person or over the phone to explore a mentor relationship.  In the coming weeks, I am available during the following times: (list them here including days, dates and times – i.e. Thursday, September 29th between 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.).  I invite you to review my LinkedIn profile and will happily provide any additional information you’d like.  I can be reached at (email address) or (phone number) and look forward to hearing back from you.

Your name
Philadelphia University, Your Major, Class of XXXX

Please note:  Both parties must feel comfortable when entering into a mentor/mentee relationship.  After the first meeting, the mentor and mentee must communicate directly with one another regarding their interest in pursuing a mentee/mentor relationship.  There are no guarantees of finding a match.
