Meet the 2009 Community Service Coordinators

Renee Horst

Student Coordinator for Community Development and Restoration Service Programs

Diamond Newman
Student Coordinator for Youth Mentorship and Education Service Programs

I am a second year Professional Communication major with a Customized Art and Design History minor from Baltimore, MD.  My favorite part of Philly is, of course, Center City. It's urban, always exciting, and simply beautiful! I always feel entertained and satisfied, visually and personally, in Center City.

I love service because it unifies people. Service brings diverse people together for one common purpose-and that is to better the world. I also love service because it creates the realization that the world has the potential to be better place, and we, the people, have the power to create solutions. We can do it!

Natasha Palmer
Student Coordinator for Health, Elderly and Special Needs Service Programs

I am a second year Health Science major and I am currently building a custom minor in Botany. My roots are in Hackensack, NJ, however I have lived in 4 states and 13 cities since birth. My favorite part of Philadelphia is the South Street area. This area is so culturally eclectic with various art murals, in a range of different mediums such as glass and spray paint, and unique shops. Plus it’s on South Street where a Jamaican gal like myself can get a decent beef patty.

I love service because in the beginning, before people worked for salary and wages, if a job needed to get done, it was done as a free service just so there could be progress. Needed progress that benefited a people, a specific area, or a nation.

Keyuna Roundtree
Student Coordinator for Hunger and Homelessness Service Programs

I am currently a sophomore majoring in International Business. Coming from Prince George's County, Maryland (right outside Washington D.C.), Philadelphia is very similar to my hometown. There is always something to do, no matter what your preferences are and the city is widely diverse. I find Philly's skyline intriguing and spectacular. My favorite part of Philly would have to be Germantown because that is the area that I frequented when I was a child because my family lived there over the years. It is dear to my heart because many of my earliest memories occurred there.

Community service appeals to me so much, simply because I feel like I am responsible for giving back to a city that has given to me so greatly over the years. Throughout life, there have been people who have opened doors for me and created opportunities someway, somehow. Community service is my way of giving back, making an impact in the community and showing others that every little bit counts.

Allison Wright
Student Coordinator for Environment and Animals Service Programs

I am a sophomore architecture major from Buffalo, NY.  I love to volunteer because of the smiles you see on people's faces after you finish helping them and how thankful they are for your help! It makes all the hard work worth it.
