About the Program

The Basic Textiles Seminar at Philadelphia University provides an introduction to textile products from raw material through finished fabrics.

Problems in the manufacture of apparel and other consumer products will be discussed. Emphasis will be given to the basic language, process flow and performance characteristics of textile materials. In addition to classroom instruction, participants will have the opportunity to tour the laboratories and make use of the University’s equipment.

Who should attend?

Basic Textiles is recommended for management personnel and trainees employed in textile- and apparel-related fields, who wish to broaden their understanding of the entire industry. It is particularly useful to those who have entered the industry with little or no background in textiles.

JUNE 18 - 22, 2007

(The next program will likely occur in summer 2009.  Stay tuned for more details.)

About the Program

This is a unique opportunity to learn the fundamentals of digital textile design and printed fabrics.  The focus of the workshop is the integration of design and technology that is essential for the successful conversion of digital images to fabric.

The Design module will introduce the student to the basic tools and techniques of digital imaging using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator design software.  Students will learn to scan original artwork, edit images, construct motifs and create basic repeat designs for the digital print output.

The Printing module will consist of learning state-of-the-art digital printer performance and maintenance, ink formulations, as well as the software used for driving printers and managing color.

Both modules will give students a hands-on opportunity to design and produce their own printed fabric.
