Day of Service is in place of classes and regular work schedules, all students, faculty and staff participate in volunteer-service activities. These activities replace all undergraduate class times, day and evening. Graduate and part-time evening student classes will meet as scheduled in the evening. - Is the University open or closed?
The University will be open at the basic services level. The library, fitness center and academic labs will all be closed until 6 p.m. Security, Admissions and several other offices will be staffed as needed. Supervisors in all offices will decide who staffs the offices that will be open. All employees and student workers should check with their supervisors about whether they are scheduled to work for some part of that day and should plan to fit volunteer service in during other hours of the day. - How long do volunteer activities go on throughout the day? How long should I plan to be involved in such activities?
All activities are scheduled between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Most projects will take two to four hours; some will take longer. Everyone should be back on campus by 5 p.m. - Where and when do I show up?
The check-in table will be outside the Kanbar Campus Center and open by 7:30 a.m. All participants should check in there to pick up a T-shirt, wristband and bottled water. Information about all volunteer projects will be available there. Project leaders will be in touch with the volunteers of their projects prior to Tuesday, Sept. 15 about where to meet (at the check-in table, somewhere else on campus or at the volunteer site). Project start times vary. Be sure to check with your Project Leader about your project’s start time. - How do I sign up for a project?

- Is food service available on campus?
Breakfast: Available at Ravenhill and Kanbar, regular hours

Dinner: Available at Ravenhill and Kanbar, regular hours
- What if I get hungry while I am off-campus midday?
Lunches will not be guaranteed. Some project hosts offer lunch; but, not all. - What if I get thirsty at the volunteer site?
At check-in, each participant will receive a bottle of water and a T-shirt to wear. We encourage all participants to bring extra water. Some project locations will provide water on site.
- How do I get to my volunteer site?
All sites have been rated as walkable, accessible by SEPTA (participants will be given free tokens), or will require car, van or bus transportation. Use of personal cars and car-pooling are fine as long as the driver has a valid driver’s license, meets state requirements for insurance, drives a vehicle in good operating condition, has one seat-belt per passenger, obeys all traffic laws, and observes safe-driving practices. Your Project Leader will coordinate transportation needs with the Day of Service Committee. The University will shuttle some groups to their sites and pick them up.
- What if I need to get back to campus for some reason?
The Project Leader will have a roster of all project participants and a cell phone to call back to the check-in desk. Participants who sustain injuries that require medical attention should contact their Project Leader, who will arrange for a trip back to campus to see Health Services staff or make a judgment as to whether the person should go straight to the nearest emergency room. We cannot transport individuals for non-emergencies other than to pick up the group at the appointed time.
- What should I wear?
Those engaged in outdoor work should wear sturdy footwear (no flip-flops or open-toed shoes), outerwear appropriate for the weather and the task, and hats. Work gloves will be provided for those doing clean-up activities.
