The week of April 19 is National Library Week. It is a week to celebrate the joys of books, reading, and libraries. At academic libraries such as the Paul J. Gutman Library, it is also a time to acknowledge our appreciation of the library as an intellectual, social, and cultural center of the university. To celebrate National Library Week at Philadelphia University, the staff of the Paul J. Gutman Library is pleased to announce the following events. In addition to these events we’ll be offering fine amnesty on any currently overdue book, and all of our book sale items will be priced at 50% off.

Monday April 19
6:00 PM Tuttleman Center Auditorium

Join us for a presentation by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Thomas Hylton, the author of Save Our Lands, Save Our Towns. In a 45-minute slide presentation, Hylton shows how 12 states, from Vermont to Oregon, have initiated a new concept in government -- comprehensive planning -- to provide a better future for their citizens. A comprehensive plan is a means of focusing on the future, encouraging people to think about what they want their communities to become, and writing those ideals down as goals. Refreshments will be served after the presentation in T109.

Tuesday April 20

Gutman Library will be sponsoring an Internet Search Skills Competition that runs from 9 AM to 5 PM. All Philadelphia University students are invited to compete for prizes for correctly answering all the questions. The link to the questions and complete details and rules will be available the morning of April 20.

Come to the media classroom at 5:15pm to hear three School of General Studies faculty members read from their works of creative writing. Alan Elyshevitz, Marion Cohen, and Stan Warren will share their poetry and short stories with us. Refreshments will be available.

Wednesday April 21

Steve Gilbert, President of the TLT Group, the international organization that promotes the advancement of teaching and learning with technology will be on our campus to meet with our Teaching, Learning, and Technology Roundtable. Gilbert will also be conducting a national Webcast event on our campus at 3:00 pm. Attendance is limited, but please contact Steven Bell at bells@philau.edu if you are interested in attending this event.

Thursday April 22

At 11 AM and 4 PM the Gutman Library staff will screening Bibliomania, a documentary film sponsored by the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America. It is an insider's view, from setup to closing, of a major Antiquarian Book Fair (San Francisco, 2003). You’ll find this film a fascinating introduction to the world of rare books and those who collect and sell them. Each screening (in the Media Class room at 11 AM and in the Rena Rowan Reading Room at 4 pm) will be followed by a showing of materials from our own rare book and archival collection.

Friday April 23

Stan Gorski, our university archivist, will lead his campus “stroll through time”. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the history of our institution and the many buildings that are part of today's campus. The tour starts in the lobby of Gutman Library at noon.
