PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY / NBC 10 RUNWAY CHALLENGE SEASON TWO (2008) EPISODE GUIDE: EPISODE 2 (MARCH 10, 2008)

Philadelphia University’s second episode of Runway Challenge aired today, March 10, at 2 p.m. on NBC10’s 10! show. This week’s challenge required students to create an “After 5” fashion for the American Heart Association Go Red for Women movement, which celebrates the power women have to wipe out heart disease and stroke.

For the challenge, the remaining nine competitors headed to Jomar Fabrics in Northeast Philadelphia to collect materials. Frantically, they scurried around the warehouse, combing through the numerous shelves of red, maroon, and purple lace, chiffon and more. Later in the week, the student designers also visited Macy’s East department store in Center City to spend $75 Macy’s gift cards on accessories. With only six days to create their next great designs, the students withdrew into Hayward Hall’s Fashion Design lab, working steadily toward Monday’s judgment.

A shocked but very happy Gina Amato (pictured right with her model) was selected the winner of the Go Red challenge for her lacey, layered, tea-length gown, which judges Karen Cooper, Macy’s East executive; Frank Agostino, eveningwear designer; Sherry Huston, Go Red for Women representative; Clara Henry, Fashion Design Program director; and 10! hosts Bill Henley and Lori Wilson thought was well complemented by the silver heels and jewelry Amato had purchased during her Macy’s shopping trip. Composed of multicolored, layered-lace ruffles, the judges pronounced the piece beautifully executed.

This time, runners-up Karen Bloomfield, who won last week’s experimental fashion challenge, and Andjela Vukancic were praised by the judges for their great use of color, texture and shape in their fun, short dress designs. David Ciuper’s dress, which featured a rip-away skirt, did not enable him to advance to next week’s challenge, and he was cut out of the competition. With more time to work on class projects now, Ciuper regarded the experience as a lot of fun.

Be sure to tune into 10! next Monday, March 17, at 2 p.m. on NBC10 to watch the eight Fashion Design students battle for first place in designing attractive, but comfortable, dance uniforms for members of the Philadelphia Soul dancers. Don’t miss a minute as the student designers work to meld the arena football team’s colors with their own personal creativity.
