Philadelphia University’s first Runway Challenge competition and runway show aired March 12 during The 10! Show on NBC10. Audience members watched in anticipation as details about the challenge unfolded and this week’s winner was declared.

The 10 designers were presented with creating an experimental design from materials purchased at Home Depot in Conshohocken, Pa., by Clara Henry, director of Philadelphia University’s Fashion Design Program. Each contestant was given $100 and less than a week’s time to make their sketches come to life.

Fashion Design senior Corrine Gilmore won the first challenge for her yellow-feather and wire-mesh dress (pictured left). Fashioned from ordinary feather dusters and metal screens, Gilmore’s design was selected for its originality, quality and aesthetic appeal by judges Clara Henry, The 10! Show hosts Bill Henley and Lori Wilson, public relations director for Ann Taylor Lynn Willis ’94, and designer Jay McCarroll, former Fashion Design student and winner of Bravo TV’s first season of Project Runway.

Runner-up Ivy Castelgrande was noted for her use of blue and green sample paint chips, which she fastened to chicken wire to create a stunning wide-collared dress. Student designer Whitney George was eliminated during the challenge. She submitted a gathered, metallic halter dress that fell short of the judges’ criteria to stay in the running. George leaves the competition with the intention to keep working and creating unique fashions.

The remaining nine contestants’ next challenge will be to create designs strictly from black and white materials. Catch all the excitement as the students strive to create a winning design by tuning to The 10! Show. With only seven weeks left in the competition, the excitement is building as only one designer will be named Runway Challenge winner and receive the coveted award of an all-expense-paid trip for two to an international fashion capital.
