Philadelphia University’s Runway
Challenge second competition and runway show aired
March 19 during The 10! Show on NBC10. The Challenge? The remaining nine contestants were charged with
creating wearable black-and-white fabric designs.
To complete their task, the student designers were given
$100 to purchase strictly black-and-white material from
Jomar Fabric in Philadelphia. Excited to create their
fabric fashions, the students had less than three days
to finish their work.
Designs presented on the runway this Monday ranged from
eveningwear, to swimwear, to business attire, but it was
Fashion Design senior Dominique Asuncion’s
fashion-forward jumper (pictured right) that took first
place in the black and white competition. Judges Clara
Henry, director of the Fashion Design Program; Lori
Wilson, co-host of The 10! Show; Elizabeth Wellington,
fashion writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer; and Janice
Martin, producer of The 10! Show were impressed with
Asuncion’s use of an original skull print inspired by
the annual Day of the Dead Mexican holiday, as well as
her acute attention to detail.
Fellow contestant and classmate Pam Martin was named
runner up for her “old Hollywood” style evening dress.
During the show, student designer Jamila Thomas was
eliminated for her menswear-inspired piece that did not
meet the judges’ requirements to advance in the
competition. Thomas was happy to have had the chance to
compete with her peers.
With only eight students and seven weeks left to
compete, Runway Challenge’s final judging, scheduled for
April 30, is looming. Catch all the excitement as the
designers create maternity fashions with materials
donated by Mimi Maternity, Monday, March 26 at 10 a.m.
on The 10! Show.
