Philadelphia University’s Runway Challenge had
everyone’s expectations running high when the Week Three
show aired on NBC10’s The Ten Show! Challenge
Three had the remaining eight contestants struggling to
complete a maternity design that would appeal to Mimi
Maternity customers — hip, flirty and youthful. It’s
definitely not your mother’s maternity dress. Mimi
supplied the material for the student designers to work
their magic.
With three days to sketch and plan, the students worked
feverishly to meet the deadline of Monday’s Runway show.
Throw Spring Break into the mix, and there was a higher
level of anxiety than usual.
All the designers met the deadline. This week’s judges
included, Clara Henry, director of the Fashion Design
Program; Bill Henley, TV personality and co-star of the
10! Show; and Lisa Hendrickson, vice president of design
for Mimi Maternity.
Comments from the judges regarding the high level of
design the students exhibited were the rule. This week’s
winner was Corrine Gilmore, for a flowing, long-dress
design that all three judges felt was elegant and best
exhibited the feminine, youthful, trendy look that
personifies the Mimi customer. This was quite a coup,
since Corrine only started the dress at 9 p.m. the
preceding evening due to the fact that she was stuck in
Charlotte, N.C.’s airport on her return from Spring
Break. Runner-up was Pam Martin, whose dress was deemed
the “most creative.”
Eliminated this week from the show was Amanda Kossuth.
The judges felt that her design appeared somewhat
unfinished, an observation she acknowledged. “It was not
my best work,” Amanda noted. "Still, it was great to have
competed."
Be sure to catch next week’s episode at 10 a.m. on
NBC10’s the 10!Show to see which designers make the cut
in Runway Challenge.
