Philadelphia University Runway Challenge heats up with only three competitions to go until a winner is named. Today’s competition that aired on The 10! Show at 10 a.m. on NBC10 challenged contestants to reconstruct an already worn item into a garment meant for a new fashion market.
To accomplish this, student designers visited a nearby Salvation Army thrift store, located in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia, for inspiration and items to redesign. Dominique Asuncion, winner of this week’s competition and runway show, purchased numerous printed T-shirts and blouses, as did runner-up Ivy Castelgrande. Judges Clara Henry, Director of Philadelphia University’s Fashion Design Program; Bill Henley and Lori Wilson, co-hosts of The 10! Show; Rainer Wolter ’03, Philadelphia University Fashion Design alumnus; and Tai Beauchamp, deputy editor of Vibe Vixen magazine were impressed with Asuncion’s youthful and eclectic print jumper, noting that her craftsmanship was top notch. They also admired Castelgrande’s voluminous handkerchief-hemmed sundress fashioned from a variety of menswear pieces. Other designs included a sunbathing suit made from knitted sweaters by Pam Martin and an eveningwear dress fashioned entirely from navy T-shirts by Alison Winters. After the judging, though, it was LaTanya Murchison’s shorts and tank top intended for teen girls that failed to make the grade and advance in the challenge.
With only five contestants remaining after today’s competition and three more weeks to go, the winning prize of an all-expense-paid trip for two to an international fashion capital is in sight. Don’t miss a moment of the final competitions; be sure to tune in next Monday to see the student designers’ unexpected takes on the Ann Taylor classic trench coat design.
