College of Design, Engineering and Commerce Named for Entrepreneur and Inventor Maurice Kanbar In May 2012, Philadelphia University announced the naming of its innovative, transdis- ciplinary College of Design, Engineering and Commerce for alumnus Maurice Kanbar ‘52, H’03, who donated $15 million in support of the College. Mr. Kanbar, an entrepreneur, inventor, Hollywood producer and philanthropist, is the embodiment of a Philadelphia University education and our Nexus Learning approach. He has achieved success across disciplines, devising products and services to make the world a better and more enjoyable place. The Kanbar College of Design, Engineering and Commerce, with its focus on transdisciplinary learning, identifying real-world problems, and creating opportunities and innovation, empowers students to lead and achieve success in the 21st-century workplace and contribute to society. An Innovative Building for the Innovative Kanbar College Set to open in January 2013, the Design, Engineering and Commerce Center (DEC Center — pictured on previous page) is designed to support the Kanbar College’s innovative curriculum, which stresses transdisciplinary, project-based learning and collaborative problem solving. The building will include flexible space for studios, semi- nars, conference meetings and team projects, allowing teaching and work space to be reconfigured as projects and curricula evolve. Designed to meet LEED standards, the unique 38,500-square-foot building features a distinctive metal shell for climate control and a two-story forum space for exhibits and presentations. 9
