Acclaimed Menswear Designer and “Fashion Star” Mentor John Varvatos accepts 2012 Spirit of Design Award John Varvatos, acclaimed menswear designer and mentor on NBC’s new series “Fash- ion Star,” took to the Academy of Music stage at Philadelphia University’s Fashion Show April 28 to accept the 2012 Spirit of Design Award. Varvatos, inspired by the music of his hometown Detroit, held top menswear design positions at Polo Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein before launching his own eponymous line in 2000. “The great thing about tonight, it’s all about inspiration and innovation,” Varvatos told the cheering crowd at the Fashion Show. “Every one of you students needs to think about being in- novators. You don’t want to be a wannabee, you want to be an about-to-be.” Industry Immersion
