Alumnus’ Portable Power Charger Goes Viral on Kickstarter Philadelphia University alumnus John Modestine’s POP — as in “Portable Power” — design caught the attention of the masses on Kickstarter in 2012. Modestine and his business partner received nearly $140,000 in crowdfunding for their project from the social entrepreneurship website. The white cylindrical recharging station features four retractable cord reels, each with dual-functioning iPhone/micro USB adapters. The inventive charger quickly gained both high praise and sales. Modestine, a 2011 industrial design graduate, has prior experience in product design consulting and graphic design. In October 2011, he was hired as a product designer at Edison Junior Design Laboratory in Santa Monica, CA, where he designed POP, which can simultaneously charge four devices at once. The product was featured by ABC News as one of the “Top 5 Gadgets of the Week.”
