We are an engine of creativity for ideas and creation of new intellectual property. Built on over 125 years of materials and textile engineering excellence, Philadelphia has unique research and testing capabilities from multiple laboratories. 

We collaborate with industry partners and can serve as an extension of their research and development capabilities, with both the expertise and laboratories to research, test, and refine new innovative technology. These initiatives vary widely in scope and duration, based on the industry partner’s needs.

The Grundy Materials Evaluations Laboratory
The Materials Evaluations Laboratory tests materials for potential toxic chemicals and other safety risks. The Materials Evaluations Lab also provides testers with a full-array of performance measurement tests to evaluate new materials for comfort, durability, product integrity and other factors.

The SEED Center
This building is the University's newest, innovative academic building.  The Center for Sustainability, Energy Efficiency and Design (SEED) is a more than 14,000-square-foot, grey-to-green renovated space.

The building was redesigned to achieve Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED)® certification. The Center is home to the Graduate Programs in the College of Architecture and the Built Environment.  The building features an interactive energy monitoring screen that provides real-time information on the building’s energy usage and carbon footprint.

The Laboratory for Engineered Human Protection
The Laboratory for Engineered Human Protection (LEHP) is funded by a U.S. Department of Defense University Research Initiative grant. The goal of the laboratory is to test, research and create apparel and gear that protects U.S. military personnel but is also functional and comfortable to wear. One prototype designed by LEHP uses bonded material used to shield soldiers from toxic materials while also allowing sufficient passage of moisture for comfort.   

Currently working with the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Center, researchers at LEHP are creating garments to protect American servicemen and women against battlefield hazards and which are also sufficiently comfortable to wear for the periods of time required by their missions.  Read more about the current research work going on at LEHP in the research highlight.

Institute for Textile & Apparel Product Safety
The Institute for Textile & Apparel Product Safety studies ways to improve methods of testing imported clothing for toxic substances and other safety risks. The institute’s research has been used in helping to develop protocols for testing and evaluating the safety risks of foreign made textile products.

Edward P. Marram Biomedical Textile Structures Laboratory
The Biomedical Textile Structure Laboratory pairs advanced textile structures with cultured stem cells to test and study the functionality of cell-covered textile structures for medical use. One of the current projects focuses on the “cardiac patch,” a biomedical engineering approach to treating coronary artery disease in the heart.

MAG Composites Institute  
Newly opened, the Composites Institute will research new developments in textile-based composites, with possible application in a wide-range of industries including aerospace, automotive and energy. The institute will also support a new B.S. Engineering degree with a concentration in composites, one of only a few similar programs in the country.

Technology Transfer
Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) research results in a wide range of intellectual property for which we seek licensing partners.
