L111 - Writing Seminar I

literacy goals for L111 students. L111 sections are drawn together by a common
first-year theme and assignment. Click

In this course, we will focus on:
 | Using resources available via Gutman Library, with emphasis on
navigating the
Library’s website.

 | Effectively using appropriate information technologies for communication
and research. Students will use the world
wide web, word processing software, and online database systems available via
Gutman Library, as deemed
appropriate by their instructors.

 | Correct
to citation and documentation of information using
MLA format.
Students will understand why documentation is important,
what plagiarism is, and what the consequences of plagiarism are at this
university.

At the discretion of the instructor, guided
research using the internet as an information resource.
|
 |
Throughout this course, students will engage in critical thinking and evaluation of information.
Students will move from text-based writing and discussion to a writing
assignment requiring the use of outside resources and research.

Affiliations with First-Year Writing
The L111 theme --"Finding Philadelphia"-- is shared
by our First Year Experience Program (FYE). This theme will arise in other
courses taken by first-year students, and will be supported by co-curricular
programming issuing from the Department of Student Life.
