Advising for Parents

The Learning & Advising Center serves as the primary academic advising resource of first year (freshmen and transfer) students as well as a continuing source of information for upper level students. A pro-active advising philosophy, faculty advisor outreach to students and a drop-in advising policy provide all first year students with the opportunity to consult regularly with a well qualified faculty advisor. We ask that parents partner with university faculty and professionals to assist your students by referring them to advising in order to clarify any of their questions about curriculum, university policy and procedures as well as their academic and personal goals. Be sure to consult Advising Answers for Parents for more specific information.

First year advisors assist new students to:

  • • learn the requirements for particular majors
  • • make good academic choices and decisions
  • • suggest strategies for classroom success
  • • monitor student academic progress
  • • refer students to appropriate University services
  • • prepare students to transition to upper level academic advising

It’s important for students to meet with their advisors:

  • • during the first month of their first semester at the university
  • • to get to know their faculty advisor and make their first professional connection
  • • to set academic and personal goals for each semester
  • • after midterms, especially if any course grade is below a C-
  • • prior to registration - by early November and early April
  • • whenever questions about academic policies or the major arise
  • • by mid-March if a student is thinking about taking a summer course at another institution
  • • when a student is considering a change of major or withdrawal from the University
