Creating a TOC
Alert in EBSCO databases (tutorial)
1. The
American Chemical Society e-journal collection provides access to all of the
full-text articles in approximately 40 journals.
Organic and inorganic chemistry
are covered by ACS publications.
2. Begin
on the home page of the American Chemical Society (ACS) E-journals.
Look at the top of the ACS Journals homepage for this tab and click on it:
3. Under E-Mail Alerts, click on the first
link: Sign up or modify E-mail Alerts
4. Under
the choice for TOC Alerts (on the right), click on the first link:
Register for TOC Alerts.
Fill out the registration form with your information, and select the journals
for which you would like to receive the TOCs.
5.
The
procedure is complete upon clicking the Submit Form button.
You will
receive a separate email message alert for each selected journal's TOC.
6. To
update or modify your TOC profile, return to the sign up for e-mail alerts area,
and then click on the link
Unsubscribe or modify registration.

1.
Science Direct provides access to journals
published by Elsevier. As Gutman Library subscribes to what is called the
Science Direct College Edition,
not all of the journals in Science Direct are available to Philadelphia
University community members
in full text. However, TOC Alerts for all Science Direct journals are available,
whether or not the actual full-text of the articles are included
in the College Edition subscription.
2.
Connect to Science Direct, and lick on on the Alerts button on the main
toolbar:

3.
Click
on the link to Register Now and complete the
registration form. Create a password, and select a Subject Area of Interest.
Be sure to agree to the User Agreement, and click
Submit.

4.
On the
next screen, you can choose from different types of Alerts. As we want to create
TOC Alert, choose Volume/Issue Alerts.
You will be linked to an alphabetical list of all the journals in Science
Direct, both those that are and are not available to you in fulltext.

5.
A more efficient way to select journals for TOC Alerts is to view the list of
Journals/Books by Subject.
In the left frame, you will see a box that allows
you to Browse.
Click on the link Journals/Books by Subject. Now,
you can view only those journals that are in the topical area of your interest.
Select your areas of interest, and click the "Apply" button.

6.
The
alphabetical list of titles is quite long, and not all titles are available to
us from Science Direct in fulltext. Limitations you can also set
can limit the
journals
only to those for which fulltext is available with our subscription to
Science Direct (denoted by the green rectangle) and
to include Journal and Book
Series.
It is up to you if you want to place further limitations; you may have
fulltext access to some of the publications either in hardcopy or
electronically
at your
places of work or via colleagues. Checkbox the "Vol /Issue Alerts"
boxes that correspond to the titles for which you
would like to receive alerts,
and click the Apply button.
When a new issue of your selected
journal is published, you will receive an e-mail message containing the table of
contents
and links to the articles and issue.

7.
The next screen shot shows how the
title list appears when limited to fulltext availability, as denoted by the
green rectangle.
Click "Full-text available"
and then "Apply" to apply this limitation.
Now, there are many less titles from
which to choose, but all are available from Science Direct in fulltext.

8. To modify or delete a TOC alert, return to the
Alerts tab and login in to modify your account.

Creating a TOC alert for
Springer journals is a little different than with Science Direct or ACS journal
collections.
-
If you are searching
within the SpringerLink E-journal collection, and viewing articles from a
specific journal,
you can, at this level of searching,
click on the link
to “Register for TOC Alerting,” which will connect you to the journal’s page
at
www.springer.com.
-
You may also visit the
page of the specific journal directly, at
www.springer.com, and sign up for an alert from
any Springer journal by
providing your email address.
When searching inside the
SpringerLink e-journal collection, in order to see the “Register for TOC
Alerting” link,
you must be at the individual journal level, not viewing the
results from a search conducted across several journals.
If you would like to
sign up for a TOC Alert from the point of a search results page, do the
following:
-
Click on the article you
like from the results list
-
View the record for the
article
-
Click on the Title of
the Journal
-
You will be at the
journal level, and the link to register for TOC Alerting will be visible
The screen shots below illustrate these four steps.

1. Conduct a search in Springer, and view the results
list. Click on the article you like from the results list.

2.
View the
record for the article. You will see the citation information and abstract, at
this point.
You don't need to see the full pdf text to register for TOC alerting.
3. Click on the
Title of the Journal

4.
The link to
register for TOC Alerting will be visible, as you are at the journal
level

Creating TOC Alerts in ProQuest
databases (such as Health & Medical Complete) is also conducted at the
PUBLICATION level.
Health & Medical Complete is used for this example, but you can use this
method for any ProQuest database.
1. Connect to ProQuest's
Health & Medical Complete database. Click on the Publications tab
at the top of the ProQuest toolbar.
Alternately, you can click on the Databases Selected link to be
connected to the Database Selection page for ProQuest.
Clicking on the "View Titles" link associated with each database will
also connect you to the publications list, where you can select titles.

2. You will see an
alphabetical list of the publications included in the database you have
chosen.
3. Click on the titles that
interest you. You will see a button on the right side of the screen that
allows you to Set Up Alert.

4. A pop-up window will appear, in which you
set up the TOC Alert for the selected title.
Note that this particular title has an "EMBARGO." The fulltext is
delayed for one year.
You will still receive the TOC Alert, but the links in the alert will
take you to the fullest record there is for the article at the time.
Therefore, you will only get indexing and abstracting for the latest
year of this publication.

1. If you don't have a profile
yet, set one up in Emerald first. Once you have a profile established, you can
simply log in
with your userid and password, whenever you want to add more titles or delete
any from your TOC Alert profile.
Connect
to the Emerald e-journal collection. Click on the My Profile link in the upper
left corner of the screen.

2. Enter your profile information and create a username
and password on the registration form.
You are now ready to log in and add titles to your TOC Alerts profile.
3. Adding titles to your alerts is done at the
publication level. Ways to get to the publication level include: selecting
the title directly from
the alphabetical menu on the Emerald homepage, Browsing titles by Subject
grouping and selecting them from within the grouping, or by
conducting a search in Emerald, deciding you like a journal article you have
found, and adding the source journal of the article to your alert.
4. This screen shot illustrates how to select publications directly from the
menu on the Emerald homepage.
Scroll down to the lower right corner of the screen to use the "Quick Link" menu
to connect to the current table of contents page for
a publication.
The journal titles in Emerald are straightforward, so this could be a sufficient
method for you.

Once
at the publication level, you have the option to "Add to my email Alerts,"
in the lower right corner of the screen.
If you are already logged in to your account (profile), the title will
immediately be added to your list of journal titles.

5. Another way to get to the publication level from the
Emerald homepage, Quick Browse by Subject brings you to
an expandable list of subject groupings. Instead of selecting a title as in the
screen shot above,
under Quick Browse, click on the link "Browse by: subject" to
connect. You will see the screen below:

6.
This screen shot illustrates the next level down in a Browse: the subject
grouping Business Ethics and Law has been selected and expanded,
to reveal the individual titles in that grouping.

7. Select the publication title you want, and you will
be connected to the current table of contents page, just as above.
Proceed to add the title to your email Alerts.
8. Once you have added a title, you will have a list in
your profile. When you log in to Emerald, you can add and delete titles
from your TOC email Alert profile.
