How to Place Items on Reserve

Faculty may place books, articles, DVDs, VHS, or CDs on Reserve

  • Bring Reserve items to Meg Leister at the Circulation / Reserve Desk on the Main Floor of the Library
  • Please indicate to Meg your name and the course name, so this information can be entered into the online catalog
  • Please allow a 2-day processing period for your items to be available to your students
  • Your items will be available for in-house use only, for a period of up to four hours at a time
  • Students must present a valid student ID at the Circulation / Reserve Desk to check out Reserve items for this loan period

Guidelines For Using Reserve

Please observe the following guidelines for using Reserve

  • Faculty may check out and remove from the Library their own items only from Reserve, for instance, checking out a DVD for in-class screening
  • Faculty members may not check out and take items from the shelves of other faculty outside of the Library building without permission, transmitted via an acceptable form of communication e.g. email, signed note, or phone call. Your faculty colleague must communicate their permission directly to Meg Leister at x0161 or to the Circulation/Reserve Desk at x2840.
  • Faculty members may share a Reserve shelf with other faculty members, to better facilitate the sharing these items when multiple sections of a course are presumed to need the items
  • Faculty members may also designate that the Course name associated with a set of Reserve items also be used as the Instructor name associated with the items. This will allow students from multiple sections of a course that is being taught by various instructors to more easily locate and access the same Reserve items
  • At the end of each semester, Faculty will be asked to indicate if they would like their items to remain on Reserve or to be returned to the Library stacks
  • If no response is received, the items will be returned to the stacks, or, in the case of personal copies, to the Faculty member, via inter-office mail

Placement of Personal Copies on Reserve

Please be advised that if you consent to have a personal copy of an item placed on Reserve, the item will be barcoded and will have a card pocket affixed to it. The item will be used by your students, and will therefore be in a different condition than it was originally. Gutman Library can not provide a 100% guarantee regarding the security or welfare of your personal items.

Placement of Requested Items on Reserve

At the time the purchase request is made, please indicate that an item is to be placed on Reserve for you. Please indicate the Instructor name and Course name under which you would like the item to be cataloged. As soon as the item is received and processed, it will be directly added to Reserve.

Items obtained via Interlibrary Loan are prohibited from being placed on Reserve.
