What's New

Headlines - Updated August 15, 2005

New PCs and Macs Arrive At Gutman Library

Gutman Library has finally replaced its original (and old) iMac computers with new PCs and iMac G5 computers. Thanks to support from the Office of Information & Technology, we now have a mix of PC and iMacs on every floor of Gutman Library. In addition, more scanners were added throughout the Library. All the Library computers have the latest software applications found on all campus lab computers.

Plunkett's Provides Industry Analysis And More

Plunkett Research Online is designed for market researchers and job seekers. It provide industry analysis and data for nearly 30 major industries, including apparel and textiles, retailing, technology, and advertising and branding. It can be used to locate information about companies within the industries, in addition to the market reports. For additional information contact Steven Bell at bells@philau.edu or 951-2847.

America: History & Life Improves Research For Historians

This new database, America: History and Life, is a complete bibliographic reference to the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. Published since 1964, the database comprises over 490,000 bibliographic entries for periodicals dating back to 1954, providing an incomparable research tool for students and researchers of US and Canadian history. Articles can be e-mailed or exported to RefWorks. For more information contact Jordana Shane at shanej@philau.edu or 951-2629.

Gutman Adds Three New EBSCO Databases

With the addition of three new databases from EBSCO Gutman has added several thousand additional full-text journals and reports to its holdings. The new databases are Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier, and Regional Business News. ACS is a multi-disciplinary database that includes information on virtually any topic. BSP specializes in business information with a number of top tier business journals in full text format, as well as company reports. Regional Business News covers nearly 100 local business papers from around the country - a great source for smaller companies. For more information about any of the databases contact your library liaison (Steven Bell - SBA, Mike Krasulski - Architecture and Design, Jordana Shane - SLA, Barbara Lowry - Textiles, and Stan Gorski - Science, Health, and Fashion).

Material Connexion Will Help Designers Who Work With Materials

Gutman Library is now providing access to the database called Material Connexion. It is a searchable database that provides information on all types of materials. Over 1,400 different materials are described. They can be searched multiple ways, including product name, process, application or keyword. Data and specifications for each material can be found in Material Connexion. For more information contact Mike Krasulski at krasulskim@philau.edu or 951-2580.

Improving Access To Medical Literature With Health  & Medical Complete

Gutman Library now subscribes to the ProQuest Health & Medical Complete database instead of the Nursing Journals FullText database. This represents an upgrade and an improvement in our access to medical information. H&MC provides access to three times as many full-text medical journals and it is much more focused on medicine and healthcare - and since it is a ProQuest database you'll be instantly familiar with it. Give it a try now. For more information contact Steven Bell at bells@philau.edu or 951-2847.

Gale's Virtual Reference Library - Reference Books on the Web

Gutman Library just added to its growing collection of electronic resources a new service that provides access to previously print only reference books - and all the text in every reference book is searchable. To begin, we have made available nine e-reference books through the Gale VRB collection. They cover business (business plans, company histories), science (biomes, water science, geology), history (industrial revolution), social science (social trends and indicators). You can search all of the books together or search them individually. And as with most of our databases any information found can be saved, printed, or otherwise acquired several ways. For more information contact Mike Krasulski at krasulskim@philau.edu or x2580.

Get It At Gutman - Our New Library Weblog

A new weblog is created every few seconds. Here's the one that can really help you stay informed - about news and developments happening at Gutman Library. We call our weblog Get It At Gutman and it provides brief news and information postings that can help you stay on top of all that we're offering here. Learn "What's New" At Gutman Library

Join the staff of the Paul J. Gutman Library on Tuesday January 25 from 11:45 am to 12:45 pm in the Media Classroom for a look at several new developments in the resources and services provided by Gutman Library. Here are just some of the topics that will be covered in this fast-paced 45 minute presentation: Access World News; Search and Content Alerts in ProQuest; Consolidated Searching; Google Scholar; and more. No reservations are needed. Refreshments will be served.

Marketing Data From MediaMark Research Available Via Gutman

Gutman Library has subscribed to MediaMark Research data in a number of formats over the past few years, first in print and then CD-ROM. Now, for the first time, this useful marketing data is available on a web site called MRI Reporter. It provides data from 2003 (and two prior years) on a group of consumer products that includes apparel, beverages, health & beauty aids, and others. The data is used to find out who uses products and what media they use (tv, radio, magazines, etc.). You will need to create an account in order to use MRI Reporter, but this is easy to do. Just go to http://www.mriplus.com and click on "register for a free account". For more information contact Steven Bell at bells@philau.edu or x2847.

Search The World's Newspaper And Get Full-Text Articles In English

Access World News is a database available through the NewsBank system (also provides the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News). It provides access to hundreds of full-text newspapers for countries around the world - all in english. There are over 1500 papers available. Over 500 of the papers are specific to the United States providing both metropolitan and regional news. For example, for the state of Pennsylvania along there are over 20 papers available representing all regions of the state. The search system is similar to many of our other databases. Use Access World News in addition to Lexis/Nexis for getting world news. For more information contact Jordana Shane at shanej@philau.edu or x2629.

ProQuest Introduces Search and Periodical Alerts

ProQuest is the name of the system that Gutman Library uses for its flagship general periodicals and business literature research. ProQuest encompasses thousands of magazines and newspapers (many full text) across all disciplines. A new feature allows anyone to request an "alert" for either a search or a periodical. Once an alert is created anytime new information is added to ProQuest that would fit that search - or the latest articles are added to a specified periodical - the creator of that alert is notified by email. Learn more about this at: http://www.philau.edu/library/gatewayupdate/gunews113004.htm#proquest

Try "Consolidated Search" - Search ProQuest and Lexis/Nexis Together

We'll be telling our user community more about this technology in the coming months, and it is somewhat of an experiment for Gutman Library, but for those who would like to give it a try we are introducing a new way to search library databases. This technology allows library researchers to search multiple systems and databases with a single search. For now, we are only enabling a multiple system search of our online catalog, PhilaFind, ProQuest databases, and LexisNexis databases. Learn more about this at:
http://www.philau.edu/library/gatewayupdate/gunews113004.htm#multi

Color Copying is Now Self-Service

Beginning this fall semester it is no longer necessary to leave material for color copying in the Media Services area. The color copier has been relocated to the copy room on the main level of Gutman Library. Color copying is now a self-service operation. The cost of a color copy has been reduced to $.99, and all copies are paid for with the Philadelphia University identification (debit) card. Color computer printing will no longer be available from Media Services. Color printers are now found in several campus computer labs.

Medical Resources Added to XreferPlus

XreferPlus is an online database that provides a searchable interface to the full text of hundreds of reference books. Recently this resource added quite a few medical reference titles, bringing the number up to 20. It is possible to search the full text of all of these titles at once. There are a range of dictionaries covering most areas of medicine. If you haven't tried XreferPlus yet, it is worth looking into.

RefWorks Improves Its Interface

Current RefWorks users will be pleasantly surprised by the improved interface to this systems for creating databases of article citations. For faculty researchers and students, RefWorks is a great tool for storing bibliographic information and notes - and then using that information to create perfect citations using any of dozens of formats. Many of the RefWorks functions are now more clear to find and use - with new menus that run across the top of the screen. Both current users and the newly interested are encouraged to examine RefWorks, or contact Steven Bell by email or phone at 215-951-2847.

How To Use "MyList" To Improve Your Research

An often overlooked but useful feature of PhilaFind, the Gutman Library online catalog, is the ability to create a temporary storage space in which catalog record information can be stored. That information can then be printed or e-mailed. This can facilitate your by allowing you to search the catalog, locate all the books in which you are interested, and then print or e-mail that list of books. Many users now print catalog information one record at a time. First, look for this button on the top of the catalog screen: . Each time you add a book to "My List" the number will increase by one. To add a book or journal record to "My List" just click this button and it will add the appropriate record to the list. Once all records have been added, click on the "My List" icon. That will lead to a screen with all the items on "My List". For more details go to:
http://www.philau.edu/library/gatewayupdate/gunews83004.htm#mylist

Avery Index and Design & Applied Arts Index (DAAI) Now On CSA

Users of these two databases will notice a change. We now are using a system called CSA (Cambridge Scientific Associates) to deliver these two databases. Yes, the interface is totally different - but definitely more user friendly. In addition, you can now search both of these databases simultaneously if desired - and there is even a "deduping" feature to eliminate duplicate results. CSA database information can also be directly exported to RefWorks - so it's far easier to keep track of citations and format them properly (although CSA's "QuikBib" feature allows some citation formatting right in the database). If you have any questions about the changeover to CSA for Avery and DAAI, please contact Michael Krasulski.

AccessScience Gets A Facelift and New Features

Almost any science research project - and we define science very broadly here - can benefit from some information found in AccessScience. AccessScience is an online version of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. It has overview articles on thousands of science topics, covering every discipline, and it even covers related fields such as computer science. The new interface is much cleaner and easier to navigate. In addition, some new features have been added, including an e-mail feature. Searchers can now e-mail AccessScience articles to themselves or colleagues. Take a look at this database, for it's biographies, bibliographies, student research guides, and more.

TTD Now On EBSCO - and changes name to Textile Technology Index

For the last two years, Gutman Library has offered access to the Textiles Technology Database through a system made available by the Institute for Textiles Technology. Because the Institute no longer exists, the TTD is now being offered through a database company known as EBSCO. It has also been renamed Textiles Technology Index. We think you'll find that EBSCO is fairly easy to use and will offer some search features that were not previously available. If you do have questions about searching TTI on EBSCO, please contact Barbara Lowry.

EZBorrow - Making It Easy To Borrow Books From Other Libraries

This new service will allow all members of the Philadelphia University community to easily borrow books from a group of approximately 40 college and university libraries. You search a database of over 35 million books, and place your own interlibrary loan request directly to the other library - with no form to fill out. All you need is you library barcode (if you don't have one, stop at our Circulation Desk). The lending libraries include those at Penn, Pitt, Rutgers, Drexel, Temple, and many others. You will receive an e-mail when your book is available (4-5 business days) at Gutman Library. To learn more, visit our EZBorrow Web page. If you have additional questions, please contact Michael Krasulski.

Used Books For Sale - Now at Gutman Library

Gutman Library receives a substantial number of donated books throughout the year. Many make excellent additions to our collection. Many others are duplicates of books already in our collection, or they do not quite fit our collection. We will now make these books available to our community. The Used Book Sale items will be found in the Current Fiction/Newspaper area of the library. Feel free to stop by and browse the collection of books for sale. Prices range from $1 to $5. All proceeds go right back into our fund for buying new books, so when you buy our used books you are helping us to build a better library collection - while you build your own.

JournalList is a List of Gutman's Full-Text Journals Online

Lexis-Nexis, Proquest and other Gutman Library databases offer access to thousands of full-text online journals. The problem is that it is often difficult to know which databases has which journal, or even if we have access to a particular journal in one of our online databases. JournalList is a new service that lists over 8,000 journal titles available in our full-text databases. If you need to know if the library has a journal in one of its online databases or e-journal collections, just use JournalList to find it. In addition, JournalList features a search engine so that journals can be found based on words in their titles. Need to find accounting journals in full-text format online? Use JournalList. Keep in mind that JournalList only lists full-text journals that are online in an electronic database. JournalList does not list our print journals nor does it list any journal that is available only in indexed or abstracted format.
