Frequently Asked Questions for Business Students

This page is designed to provide students in Philadelphia University's School of Business Administation with information about using Gutman Library and its resources for research assignments. Please submit your questions and suggestions for improving this page to Steven Bell.

You will find the following questions on this page:

What are Gutman Library's hours?

We maintain a schedule page within our site that lists our current schedule. The hours posted change as necessary to reflect holidays, intersession periods or other deviations from the normal semester schedule. We also post any schedule changes on the Gutman Library Home page and communicate this information in Get It At Gutman, our library blog.

How do I access the Library databases from off campus?

Go to the Gutman Library Home Page and proceed as usual to connect to any database. When you are off campus you will be taken to a screen that prompts you for your Philadelphia University network account. Provide this information  as requested and you will be connected to the database. For more information with instructions see the OIT page on remote access to library databases.

Should I use ABI/Inform or Business Source Premier for my business research paper?

While there is some duplication between these two top notch business literature databases, each has many unique publications. Also, if you are looking for full-text, one may have it and the other will not (the Harvard Business Review is a good example). Both could be good for any research requiring scholarly journals (Profs. Rusinko and Lermack are just two SBA faculty that will expect you to use scholarly journals in your research). If you just need a few quick articles, either one could probably get the job done. If you want to have the database provide the formatted citation for your article, ABI makes it easier to do.

Where Can I Get Good Business Information on Lexis/Nexis?

To search companies, click on SEARCH and BUSINESS in the top left tabs. This takes you to the Company Dossier page, which also includes SEC filings, accounting and country profiles. In addition to searching for company information you can

  •   create a list of similar companies based on sales/revenu, SIC code, NAICS cade or geography
  • compare up to 5 companies' balance sheets and income statements

If you click on SEARCH and GENERAL, you can search across LN resources for a topic.

SEARCH and PEOPLE allows you to find specific people, people in an industry or kind of position.

There are tutorials on nearly every screen to help you make the most of this powerful resource.

What is Refworks and how can it help me?

Refworks is web-based personal bibliographic software and can help you store information about the sources you find and then format them correctly for your bibliography.

Several of our databases, including both ProQuest and First Search, allow you to automatically export citations you locate directly to Refworks. This allows you to quickly and conveniently retrieve citations you want to use again or to incorporate them into your research papers.

Since you set up your own Refworks account, you can access your citations from anywhere you have an internet connection. For more information or to establish an account go to our Refworks web page.

How can I get Table of Contents page alerts for journals that I want to follow regularly while I'm a student at Philadelphia University?

Several of our Gutman Library databases and e-journal systems (like Proquest, Science Direct, Springer Online, and Ebsco) allow you to create an e-mail Table of Contents (TOC) alert. Whenever a new issue of that journal is added to one of our databases (whether it is  available in full-text or not) you will receive an e-mail message that lists the contents along with links to the articles.
