Science and Health Care
Database Information
This page lists the various library databases
which may be relevant to your research in science including
resources specifically related to biology, ecology, physics/mathematics,
chemistry, health care, medicine, occupational therapy and psychology.
Academic Search Premier:
This EBSCO database is a gateway to a large number of scientific, medical, and
technology journals. It is known as a source for extensive full-text holdings of
journals, some of which offer backfiles extending 30 or 40 years. Be aware that
for some titles, the most recent issues may not be available in full-text format
owing to publisher embargoes.
Connect
AccessScience:
A web-based version of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and
Technology. Additional features allow for in-depth content searching beyond
what is offered in the standard printed index. This material is updated on a
monthly basis. Connect.
American
Chemical Society: Journals
This site provides full-text access to 30+ titles from the American Chemical
Society (ACS). Features available include a search system for locating articles
by topic and an e-mail table of contents alert service. From the ACS
Publications Home Page click on the button (left side of page) for
"journals and magazines". From this
page, you can request a journal by title; they are listed alphabetically.
Alternately, you can click on the
"search" tab (top of page) to search the collection by keyword. Connect.
Cochrane Library of Reviews
This resource is more unique in nature. It is the best single source of reliable
evidence about the effects of health care. The Cochrane Library consists of a
regularly updated collection of evidence-based medicine databases, including The
Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews - evidence based systematic reviews
prepared by the font color="#cc3300">Cochrane
Collaboration which provide high quality information to people
providing and receiving care and those responsible for research, teaching,
funding and administration at all levels. Press the link that says
"connect" at the end of this sentence, and when you get to the login
screen, just click on the "enter" button (no username or password is
needed when on campus or connecting correctly from off camups). Connect
FirstSearch:
A disciplinary system with databases on a variety of subjects. Select
the specific database from the drop menu next to the advance search box. FirstSearch
has a unique feature - the ability to obtain a list of libraries that own a book
or a journal - convenient for identifying a local library if Gutman Library
doesn't own the item. No
full text in these databases.
BasicBIOSIS - Covers 350 journals in the life sciences over a period of 5
years. Connect.
BioDigest - Biology Digest indexes over 370 sources life-science in a
non-technical style. Connect
GEOBASE - Over 2,000 sources of information on geography, geology and
ecology. Connect
PsycFIRST - Abbreviated version of PsycINFO, includes only the current
year and 3 years back.

Medline - The premier database for clinical medical research; an authoritative
resource for searching the world's medical literature. Connect
Harrison's
Online:
Harrison’s Online turns the world’s leading textbook of medicine, Harrison’s
Principles of Internal
Medicine, into an updated medical database that delivers the high-quality
information synonymous with the Harrison’s name with the immediacy that only
the online environment can provide. It is continually updated to provide the
latest-breaking clinical trial news. It includes links to relevant sites,
illustrations and self-assessment questions. This database also includes access
to the full text of the New England Journal of Medicine.

SpringerLink:
SpringerLink is a collection of over 750 journals, primarily in the
scientific and technology area. Most physical sciences are represented, as well
as computer science, materials science and health science. The journals can be
reviewed alphabetically or by subject area. In addition, all tables of contents
and abstracts can be searched by subject (the full-text is not searchable). The
full-text articles are in PDF format.

Chemistry - 75+ full text journals.
Environmental Sciences - 50+ full text journals.
Medicine - 140+ full text journals.
Physics - 50+ full text journals; plus 30+ full text journals in
mathematics.
Psychology - 150+ full text journals.
LexisNexis:
This gateway provides access to thousands of full-text newspaper, magazines,
journals and documents
from a wide range of global sources. Sources are categorized into five major
areas: news, business, medical, legal research and general reference. This
database provides mostly popular, general interest and trade/industry
information. However, the medical component includes three sections, two of
which can be useful in research.
General Medical & Health Topics - Access with full text to 35+
medical newsletters; updated frequently. Connect
Medical Abstracts - This section searches MEDLINE, the medical journal
database started in 1965 by the National Library of Medicine. It indexes over 2,000 journals; it is not full
text. Connect
OT SEARCH
This bibliographic database is maintained by the American Occupational
Therapy Association. It indexes over 70 journals relevant to the field of occupational therapy. There are no fulltext articles. This database
requires a password for access; contact your INSTRUCTOR. Connect
ProQuest:
A gateway to a group of databases of over 2,500 journals; over half of which
are available in full text. While it is possible to search the entire
collection at one time (a default search), specific subject areas may be
searched independently.
Health Module - includes coverage on medical conditions, substance abuse,
insurance, health policy, etc.
Large percentage of the articles are full text.
Connect
Psychology Module - includes coverage on human development, learning,
psychology, etc. Connect
Sciences Module - Over 387 journals on all areas of science, some which are

ScienceDirect
ScienceDirect is a collection of nearly 2,000
electronic journals. The collection is divided into different subject
collections. Currently, Gutman Library subscribes ONLY to the Physical Sciences
and Engineering
collection. The Physical Sciences and Engineering collection contains approximately
850 full-text
journals that provides disciplinary coverage for chemistry, chemical
engineering, computer science, earth sciences, energy, engineering, materials
science, math, and physics and astronomy. Though we only have
access to the full text of journals in the Physical Sciences and Engineering collection, it is
possible to do a search of the entire ScienceDirect collection in the pursuit of
literature on a wide range of social science and health science topics. To proceed once
you are in ScienceDirect, click on the "search" tab. You can
search all the collections, or change the "display" to only
"subscribed" collections - which will limit the retrieval to journals
in the Materials Sciences Collection.
