Tradecards of Philadelphia
Textile Related Companies.
Trade or advertising cards
were the primary American marketing tool in the later part of the 19th century.
Before widespread advertising in magazines was accepted, tradecards were
actively distributed to a wide range of consumers. Due to the high quality of
design work and abundant use of color, many individuals actively collected these
marketing giveaways. Beside being eye catching, in many instances valuable
information regarding products and production techniques were included on these
cards.
The Special Collections
Department has initiated a specific quest to obtain tradecards dealing with the
textile products that were produced in the Philadelphia area. This limitation
also includes retailers that were located in the Delaware Valley. Of
course, unique or specialized cards from other parts of country may also be
acquired for the collection depending on circumstances.
