Services for Philadelphia University Students

BORROWING LIBRARY MATERIAL
Books and other materials may be borrowed and returned at the Check-Out desk on the main floor of the library. To ensure their availability, reference books, magazines and journals do not leave the library. Barcodes attached to valid ID cards allow you to borrow library materials for a loan period of three weeks (the faculty loan period is the semester). If the materials are not overdue, and they have not been requested by another patron, they may be renewed in person or over the phone.

JOURNALS / MAGAZINES
The library subscribes to over 1600 journals and periodicals, nearly 800 are in paper format. Current journals and magazines are located on the main floor to the right of the main entrance. Virtually all of our current print journals and magazines are searchable in PhilaFIND, the library's online catalog. In addition, through library databases and e-journal collections an additional 8,000 full-text electronic publication can be accessed. To search for titles available, consult JournalList - our A-Z list of electronic publications.

RESERVE COLLECTION
Faculty frequently place books and articles on reserve for student use. These materials are listed on the library catalog and can be signed out for use within the library at the Check-Out desk. Many instructors also make reserve readings electronically available on ERes. Audio visual materials, such as videos, DVDs, and audio tapes are also placed on reserve with the main reserve collection (not in Media Services). The reserve collection is found at the library's circulation desk.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN
Students and faculty may request books and journal/magazine articles that the Gutman Library does not own from other libraries. This service is free and is made possible by reciprocal agreements with neighboring libraries. Please allow 7-10 working days for requests. Use EZ-Borrow to directly request a book from another library. For more information, see our ILL information page.

PHOTOCOPIES and COMPUTER PRINTING
Photocopy machines are available in the copy room on the main floor of the library. Two black and white copiers are located on the first floor and are equipped with $1.00 and $5.00 bill changers. B&W copies are $.10 when a a campus (ID) debit card is used. Copies paid for with coin or bill are $.15 each. An additional copier is located on the lower level. All copiers make 11x17 copiers but they are double the price of 8x11 copies. A self-service color copier is located on the main level in copier room. Color copies cost $.99 each.

All public computer workstations and library-owned laptops print to one of two main network printers. There is a printer on the main level and a printer on the lower level. Students may direct their print output to either of these B&W printers. Prints are deducted automatically from student quotas. There is a color laser printer on the lower level of the library. The cost of color prints is $.50 per print.

LAB WORKSTATIONS
Computer workstations similar to those found in the Search Hall Labs will be found on all levels of Gutman Library. All Gutman Library computers contain a full suite of Microsoft software, as well as network access. Laptops may be borrowed at the circulation desk.

GROUP STUDY ROOMS
The library has seven group study rooms that accommodate two to six people. These rooms are equipped with table and chairs, power outlets and blackboards. Room 101 has a 42" flat panel monitor that is laptop ready. Students who need a private place for study and discussion may request a key at the Check-Out desk. These rooms are available on a first come, first served basis and a current ID card is required. There is a four hour time limit on all study rooms.

MICROFORMS
Many library materials, such as newspapers, magazines, college catalogs are kept on microfilm or microfiche. Most microforms are located on the ground floor of the library in the Media Services area. Coin operated reader-printers for both formats are available for student and faculty use. The library's newest microform reader makes it possible to both e-mail and computer print any microform image.

SCANNING SERVICE

Multiple scanners are found throughout the library on every building level. Students are able to scan photographs from magazines and texts, and students can save canned images directory to one's home directory.

FOOD AND BEVERAGES
Smoking, food and beverages are not permitted in the Gutman Library. Please help us maintain a clean and pleasant environment by following these guidelines.
