The re-entry to practice process (also called a refresher process) is for Certified Nurse-Midwives
or Certified Midwives (CNM/CMs) who have previously been or are currently AMCB certified, but have been
out of clinical practice and are looking to refresh their knowledge and skills in anticipation of
re-entry to clinical midwifery practice. The American College of Nurse-Midwives guidelines on
re-entry to clinical practice is available here:
http://www.midwife.org/siteFiles/education/reentry_guidelines_2010.pdf.
Applying as a Re-entry student
We understand that circumstances are varied and re-entry needs are unique.
Applicants are encouraged to call and speak with an admissions counselor at
215-951-2525 for individualized information. Re-entry applicants will need
to submit:
- Graduate Student Application marked “refresher process”
- Professional CV/Resume with references
- Verification of all clinical license(s) – active or inactive
- Official Transcripts of all college/university courses, including basic midwifery education
- Proof of current or prior AMCB certification
- Clinical Site Form
Application materials can be
downloaded here.
A phone/web-based faculty interview is arranged with the applicant
when application materials are complete. Students are responsible for identifying
a clinical site during the application process (Clinical Site Form). Once a student
is accepted into the re-entry process, the Institute processes a formal
affiliation agreement with the proposed clinical site.
Re-entry Course of Study
Once accepted, students enroll at the Midwifery Institute of Philadelphia University
as non-matriculated students and are eligible to take courses as credit-by-exam.
Course of study is determined after review of admission documents and an advisory
meeting with the Associate Program Director. When students begin their studies,
they are assigned a faculty contact available to them throughout their re-entry
process. Refresher students also have access to the on-line virtual midwifery lounge
where lively discussion occurs between basic midwifery students, Masters completion
students and Institute faculty. Refresher process students are welcome to register
for on-campus hand skills workshops scheduled throughout the year to participate in
presentations, interactive clinical simulations and use of task trainers depending
on their individual learning needs and preferences.
Credit-by-Exam
Credit-by-exam is a process where a student pays for one academic credit and is
then given access to learner objectives, learner resources and faculty guidance for
a course. The student studies the materials for the course and takes all course
exams. Upon successful completion of course exams, the student is awarded
credit-by-exam for the course. For example, if a student takes credit-by-exam
for CMW-610 Antepartum Care, the student pays for one credit, studies, successfully
takes the exams showing mastery of didactic content and is awarded 4 credits
for CMW-610. Courses are taken as credit/no credit.
Successful completion of each credit-by-exam is recorded on the student’s
transcript. Upon successful completion of theory courses, students are eligible to
begin a supervised clinical experience under the direction of a qualified CNM/CM
preceptor. Students must demonstrate competency in all aspects of midwifery care
they are refreshing. Upon successful completion of the clinical practicum, the
student is issued proof of re-entry to practice process completion by the Program
Director and is able to obtain a transcript of all course work completed as
credit-by-exam from the University Registrar.
While the course of study is individualized, a typical program of study for a
midwife who has not practiced for more than 5 years includes credit-by-exam for
the following courses:
- Semester 1: CMW-607 Well Woman 1; CMW-620 Well Woman 2; CMW-610 Antepartum;
- Semester 2: CMW-611 Intrapartum; CMW-612 Postpartum/Newborn; CMW-619 Perinatal Complications
- Semester 3: CMW-634 Clinical Full-scope Midwifery II
Additionally, each applicant is responsible to check with their state regulatory
board for any Board required courses such as: CMW-699 Advanced Physical Assessment,
CMW-638, 639 Advanced Pharmacology I and II, CMW-604 Advanced Anatomy &
Physiology and to see what re-entry requirements, if any, the Board has.
