M.S. IN MIDWIFERY UNIQUE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Recommended Computer Systems &
Your Knowledge of the Computer
Our computer environment is intuitive and easy to use; however, students will need to
have basic knowledge of computer skills, word processing, and Internet use. At
orientation students learn how they will use the computer during their program of
study and how they will communicate with both their faculty and classmates. Students
new to computers are encouraged to enroll in a computer course prior to orientation.
Computer specifications change over time. Generally a computer (Mac or PC) that is
2-3 years old with a good internet connection will be sufficient for the program. As a
guide, see the most recent specifications outlined by the university:

In addition to a computer, Program Specific Requirements include:
Logitech headset with usb port capabilities (or similar product)
A telephone near the computer and a telephone headset.
Clinical Preceptorship
The program is six semesters of full time study. The first two semesters include
didactic courses only. The second two semesters include didactic and office based
clinical courses requiring 12-16 hours per week of clinical. During the last
two semesters, didactic work
continues and the clinical experience includes all phases of labor, and birth
and well-woman care and may be require up to 40 hours per week. Only part-time
employment should be considered while undertaking this full-time program.
Clinical Requirements
Students are required to be "safe beginner level practitioners" before graduation.
Evaluation of clinical progress is competency based with the following
minimum guidelines:
Insurance Coverage
Students must show proof of coverage for malpractice
liability prior to starting clinical rotations. This insurance
is readily available to students through the ACNM. Students are responsible for their
own medical and dental care while enrolled in the
program. Students may need to submit to, and be
financially responsible for, any reasonable health
screening that is required by a clinical agency beyond
that required by The Midwifery Institute of Philadelphia
University for admission.
Accreditation and Certification
The program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for
Midwifery Education recognized by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. Their
mailing address is: ACNM Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME),
8403 Colesville Road, Ste. 1550, Silver Spring, MD 20910-6374, (240) 485-1800.
Graduates are eligible to take the national certification examination offered by the
American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) to earn the credential
CNM or CM. Completion of the program prepares graduates to work in all practice
settings.
