M.S. in Modeling, Simulation and Data Analytics

About the Program

The PhilaU online master’s MSDA program is designed to educate you to apply modern, computer-based modeling, simulation, visualization and analysis tools to complex systems problems in a wide range of professional fields to support decision-making, strategic planning and communication within an organization.  You will learn specific software-based tools that will allow you to model, simulate, visualize and analyze complex systems, along with the communications methods to explain the information successfully.

This program is designed for working professionals and people with STEM or quantitative business backgrounds, as well as organizations that wish to address data issues.   Organization representatives can enroll in the program as cohorts and focus their coursework on their specific organization.

"There will be a shortage of talent necessary for organizations to take advantage of big data. By 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions.

-McKinsey Global Institute

Upon completion of this curriculum, you will be able to:

  • Identify the individual elements of complex systems problems
  • Explain the methodologies used in modeling, simulation, visualization and data analytics
  • Model complex systems at the appropriate scope and spatial/temporal scale
  • Simulate scenarios using these models to develop predictive data
  • Select appropriate data sets to be used in comparison with simulation results
  • Analyze simulation results in order to extract meaningful knowledge
  • Synthesize extracted knowledge into specific recommendations
  • Communicate recommendations effectively to decision-makers and other stakeholders using appropriate visual, verbal and written media
  • Manage individual and team projects effectively and efficiently
