The PhilaU OT Program
PhilaU’s OT program is delivered in an innovative hybrid learning model, where students attend on-campus classroom sessions 8 weekends/ semester, typically every other weekend (Friday/Saturday). The remaining educational dialogue occurs online through distance learning technologies. The knowledge, skills, and ways of thinking that students acquire from classroom and applied experiences enables them to work as OT professionals in all settings, from early intervention and school classrooms to community agencies and medical facilities. In these various settings therapy can involve everything from restoring, maintaining or developing abilities to adapting the environment to support individuals in achieving quality of life.
Program results from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) can be found online at https://secure.nbcot.org/data/schoolstats.aspx
Two Levels of OT Clinicians
Occupational therapists are educated at the master’s level and have greater responsibility for directing the occupational therapy process. PhilaU has two pathways to become an occupational therapist:
- Enter as a graduate student after having completed a bachelor’s degree (click here for information about the MS in OT program).
- Enter as a freshman in the combined BS/MS program (click here for information about the BS/MS in OT program).
Occupational therapy assistants are educated at the associate degree level and work under the supervision of occupational therapists. PhilaU’s Occupational Therapy Assistant Studies Program is delivered through the Office of Continuing and Professional Studies, click here for information about that program.
Occupational therapists help people of all ages to improve their functional independence after illness, injury, or delays in growth and development. The profession of Occupational Therapy (OT) is grounded in the fields of science and psychology. At PhilaU we believe that occupational therapists use their expertise and knowledge, combined with creativity, compassion, and coaching, to help people live their lives to the fullest. Our students are passionate about the profession and committed to making a positive impact on the people with whom they work.
PhilaU’s program has a clear emphasis on real-world interdisciplinary collaboration. Our OT students gain hands-on experience working with other students from a variety of disciplines to provide services to real people in need. This distinctive PhilaU model of learning, called Nexus Learning, affords OT students with a unique perspective on the diverse delivery of occupational therapy services.
