FACULTY ACTIVITIES

Catherine Verrier Piersol co-edited with Phyllis Ehrlich and authored a chapter in "Home Health Practice: A Guide for the Occupational Therapist". This comprehensive manual, published in 2001, offers practical information and an appendix full of reproducible patient education and home program materials.

Ms. Piersol serves as the Communications Liaison for the American Occupational Therapy Home and Community Health Special Interest Section and is past co-chair of the Commission on Organizational Affairs for the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association (POTA). She is currently on the Central Conference Committee for POTA.

Ms. Piersol is currently participating in two research projects at the Center for Applied Research on Aging and Health at Jefferson College of Health Professions; Laura Gitlin, PhD, Director and Principle Investigator.

  •  Project ACT   Advancing Caregiving Techniques: Reducing Caregiver Upset with Disruptive Behaviors.  Funded by National Institute on Aging and National Institute on Nursing Research  #R01 AG22254-01

  •  TAP – The Tailored Activity Plan. Funded by the National Institute on Mental Health, #R21-MH069425-01.

Cynthia Haynes addressed 2 classes of childcare providers as part of the "Enhancing Parenting Skills" Program, funded by the City of Philadelphia's Department of Human Services, Division of Community-Based Prevention Services. Ms. Haynes demonstrated how simple toys can be used to encourage development, and how community residents could develop their own family day care sites.

Ms. Haynes represents Philadelphia University on the Philadelphia Region Fieldwork Consortium, which includes Temple University, Thomas Jefferson University, and University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

Susan Haiman has served as the President of the Pennylvania Occupational Therapy Association from 1999 through October 2002. During her administration, she has focused on accomplishments in:

  • Fostered POTA entrance into the political / legislative arena through introduction of legislation in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to assure the "occupational therapy" is specifically listed as a provider in what is lovingly called "insurance law".
  • Facilitated resolution of reimbursement problems with one of the state's largest private insurers
  • 3 years of:
    • Wonderfully successful state conferences
    • Balanced budgets
    • Increased sophistication in our use of technology
    • Fantastic commitment from the state- wide board and local district volunteers who held offices, chaired commissions or committees and served on those committees as workers in a common spirit of the profession.
