FIELDWORK
Fieldwork
experiences provide OT students with many opportunities to evaluate their
career interests and to make the important transition
from learning to practice.

Typical fieldwork sites include:
- Traditional medical settings (rehab hospitals, outpatient
clinics, nursing homes)
- Public school settings, cerebral palsy centers, summer
camps
- Community settings, group homes, senior citizen centers,
assisted-living facilities, or sheltered workshops.
Fieldwork placements are divided into two phases: Level I and Level II.
Level I:
Level I fieldwork begins in the first semester and continues through the
sixth semester, and provides the opportunity for structured student interaction
with clients under the guidance of a practicing professional. This
experience enables the student to apply the techniques, theory and assessment
tools that they are learning in the classroom.
During this time, each student experiences five different off-campus sites
and one on-campus experience. At least one of the five placements is in a
non-traditional setting, and conducted under the supervision of a social worker,
nurse, physician, recreational therapist, etc.
Level II:
After six semesters, students begin two 3-month Level II fieldwork affiliations.
Students are encouraged to identify sites of interest to them. The expectation
of Level II fieldwork is that the student functions as an entry-level
practitioner, carrying a caseload of clients and designing therapies
for each client. Students are supervised by an OT, but responsible for their
own cases.
A unique element of Level II fieldwork is an on-line
clinical reasoning course that runs parallel with placements. This
course helps students make links between classroom theory and their daily
professional practice.
