• The Philadelphia University Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2006 achieved a 100 percent first-time board pass rate. PhilaU PA students have scored higher than the national average since 1997.

  • Professor Michael Rackover, director of the Physician Assistant Studies Program, was elected to serve a second term on the National Coalition for Health Professional Education in Genetics Board of Directors, January 2008.

  • Coach Herb Magee ’63, Men’s Basketball, winner of the NCAA Guardian of the Game Award, received a special achievement award January 28, 2008, from the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association in recognition of becoming the most-winning D-II coach in NCAA history on February 1, 2007. Coach Magee also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philadelphia Sports Congress in June 2007.

  • Professor Josh Owen, Industrial Design, Craig R. Benson term chair for Innovation and academic coordinator of Study Abroad in Milan, Italy, was awarded 1s place in the 2007 International Design Awards and received The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design 2007 Good Design Award for his aluminum cube jigger design.

  • His sophomore design studio class was selected by an international jury to exhibit at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City, May 2007.

  • Sarah Pantaleo ’06, Industrial Design, won the top $25,000 prize in a Staples design competition for the next great office product. Pantaleo’s SpindleRack is an organizational and space-saving tool for CD storage.

  • Alumnus Jay McCarroll, Fashion Design, won the first season of Bravo TV’s Project Runway.

  • Philadelphia University’s Engineering and Design Institute was awarded the 2007 Board of Directors Leadership Award by the Delaware Valley Green Building Council, October 2007.

  • Professor Hitoshi Ujiie, Textile Design, had digital inkjet banners exhibited in the prestigious National Design Triennial: Design Life Now at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York from December 2006 to July 2007.

  • The banners remain part of the Cooper-Hewitt’s permanent collection. In addition, Hitoshi is the recipient of The Leverhulme Trust Visiting Research Fellowship, in conjunction with University of the Arts London.

  • Dr. Steven Dinero, Area Studies, presented "Pressed to the Margins: Negev Bedouin Identity Development in a Post-Nomadic Town," to the Middle Eastern Studies Association Meeting in Montreal, November 2007.

  • Dr. Claudia Phillips, Landscape Architecture, was elected vice president/ president-elect of the International Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA), 2007-2010.

  • The Laboratory for Engineered Human Protection has been funded by the Department of Defense since August 2004 to help develop state-of-the-art protective garments for military personnel that are highly functional, as well as sufficiently comfortable for use in battlefield conditions.

  • Drs. Anne Bower and Diana Cundell, Biology, presented “Impact of Invasive Earthworm Control Treatments on Soil Microflora and Vertebrate Fauna in an Urban Northeast Forest Restoration Site,” at the Ecological Society of America and Society for Ecological Restoration National Meetings in San Jose, Calif., August 2007.

  • Dr. Fernando Tovia, Engineering; Dr. Muthu Govindaraj, Textile Engineering; and Dr. David Brookstein, dean of the School of Engineering and Textiles, presented "A New Multidisciplinary Engineering Education Initiative" at the American Society of Engineering Education 2007 Annual Conference.

  • Alumnus Richard Dobrowolski was named one of twenty-four 2006 Heroes of Chemistry by the American Chemical Society (ACS).

  • Professor Frank Baseman, Graphic Design Communication, has exhibited “The Graphic Imperative: International Posters for Peace, Social Justice and the Environment, 1965-2005” in the United States and abroad.

  • Hilary Jay, director of The Design Center at Philadelphia University, was awarded a position in the two-year leadership program of the Pew’s Philadelphia Cultural Management Initiatives.

  • Dr. Davinder K. Malhotra, Thomas J. Herzfeld term chair for Finance, presented "Mutual Fund Governance, Fund Returns, Expenses, and Cash Flows" at the Academy of Financial Services Meeting, October 2007.

  • Dr. Cathy Rusinko, Management, was invited to participate in the Youth Council on Sustainable Science and Technology Meeting in Washington, D.C., June 2007.

  • Dr. Les Sztandera, Computer Information Systems, chaired the 10th IASTED International Conference on Intelligent Systems and Control in Cambridge, Mass., November 2007.

  • Casey Saccomanno ’08, Fashion Design, was awarded one of the first $25,000 YMA Geoffrey Beene National Scholarships at the YMA Geoffrey Beene Fashion Scholarship Dinner, January 2008.
