LION'S CLUB YOUTH EXCHANGE

The Welcome of European Cities and Towns

IV. Public Activities

The public spaces became even more dynamic when they were used for public activities.  They became the backdrop for great events and things to do.  Free public activities bring people together, as well as expose people to things they might not search out or pay for themselves.  The market on the first page provided great local produce and other products.  At the same market, people saw old friends and stopped to chat, or learned about a new vegetable or cut of meat they had never used before.

Outdoor art exhibit

This exhibit of cow photographs in a Paris square examplifies the versatility of the public square.  It was great to wander through interesting exhibits in the open air.

Horse show in Hyde Park

We stumbled across the local riding club's annual horse show quite accidently while walking through Hyde Park.  A couple dozed off to one side of us while the kids next to us stared in fascination.

Stockholm park performance

Music could be heard through the entire park, changing its whole feel.  Cafe goers sipped a little more slowly to enjoy it.  Pedestrians made an unplanned stop for a few moments.  Other people had obviously come for the show.

Stockholm ski hill

The ski hill was probably the most surprising public amenity I had ever seen in a city.  It is small, but gives the people of Stockholm quick access to a place for recreation.
