Why Study Chemistry?
Chemistry is an appropriate major for students considering medical school, as well as for those who would like to pursue advanced study and/or careers in research, development, or production within the chemical industry.
Chemistry at PhilaU
The program is fully accredited by the American Chemical Society.
Students work with faculty on real-world projects, learning how to complete each step of an independent research project that leads to the production of a scientific report suitable for publication. These steps include conducting literature searches, learning research methodologies, and developing technical writing skills.
Recent student-faculty research partnerships have led to joint presentations at national conferences in Atlanta, Toronto, Denver, San Diego and New Orleans, as well as publication in scholarly journals such as the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Heterocycles, and the Journal of Physical Chemistry.
The program provides students with expertise in molecular modeling, computations, chemistry and interdisciplinary studies with biology and computer science.
Students gain familiarity with high-technology equipment such as mass spectrometer, nuclear magnetic resonance, atomic absorption spectometer, gas chromatograph, computer systems and software and synthesizers (protein and peptide).
Summer research opportunities to work with professors are available beginning after freshman year. |
