Why Study Public Health?

With modern threats such as emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, bioterrorism, environmental disasters, and exposures to unsafe food and toxic chemicals, public health issues are with us every day in our lives. With this emerging concept in mind, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences recommended in 2003 that “all undergraduates should have access to education in public health.”

The discipline of public health has become increasingly important and public health education programs are growing in popularity. While many schools offer the Master’s in Public Health degree, Philadelphia University provides a unique opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree in this exciting field.

The PhilaU Advantage

Building on a foundation of excellent programs in science and psychology, PhilaU has created a multidisciplinary public health degree that combines our innovative general education curriculum (the College Studies Program), with coursework in science, statistics, psychology, business and environmental sustainability. This unique curriculum is focused on current scientific issues affecting community health, global health and environmental sustainability. Delivered using hands-on methods of instruction that include case-based learning, the program offers several concentration tracks and electives that allow students to explore various aspects and career paths in this broad field. Courses are combined with opportunities for internships and study abroad experiences in public health.
