Jeff earned his Ph.D. in biology from the University of Pennsylvania. He teaches introductory biology and genetics for biology and pre-health majors and is the coordinator of the DEC Systems classes, non-majors science classes based on a systems modeling approach.

Jeff’s field research is based in the Area de Conservación Guanacaste in NW Costa Rica where he is the president of InvestigadoresACG, an organization that supports research and teaching. His scientific research has focused on the process of forest regeneration in degraded tropical dry forest. On campus he studies the effect of active learning techniques in STEM education and enjoys getting involved with projects that involve biology students working in collaboration with other majors, particularly projects that involve biologically inspired design or the development of tools for biology research.
