Homebirth Practice Essentials
AN ONLINE CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE FACILITATED BY HILARY SCHLINGER,
C.N.M., C.P.M., M.S.
Homebirth Practice Essentials is a 60-hour interactive, online course for midwives interested in
operating an independent homebirth practice. Course topics include the history of homebirth, a
national and international homebirth perspective, safety — what the studies show, legislation and
regulation of homebirth practice, informed consent and client responsibility, routes to obtaining
homebirth experience, creating a business plan and compiling practice documents, skills and
equipment, and billing essentials. Participants will need to arrange separate mentored experiences
in their home communities. The tips, tools, and multiple resources ensure that, by the end of
this course, the midwife will have both a plan of action and the documents needed for initiating
homebirth practice. Designed for the busy practitioner, participants can learn at their own pace
while interacting online with colleagues within a six-week time frame. An estimated 10 hours a week
should be allocated in order to be successful. The course is asynchronous, meaning that students log
in when convenient versus the same time every day. Students must possess a working knowledge of
basic computer skills including word processing, e-mail, internet searches, and navigating the web in
order to successfully complete this course.
