INTERIOR DECORATING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

The School of Continuing and Professional Studies offers a non-credit certificate program in Interior Decorating.  

Have you always been interested creating beautiful spaces?  Are you the one your friends call when they want decorating advice?

This non-credit certificate program is geared toward those wishing to gain knowledge of the essentials of interior decorating, either for use in a career or for personal satisfaction.   A certificate of completion will be awarded to students who successfully complete this eight-course sequence.

  • Interior Decorating Fundamentals (No Prerequisite/recommended first course) - offered fall, spring and summer
  • Space Planning (Prerequisite: Fundamentals) - offered fall and spring
  • Introduction to Textiles & Materials (Prerequisite: Fundamentals) offered spring
  • Lighting (Prerequisite: Fundamentals and Space Planning) - offered fall and spring
  • Historic Styles (Prerequisites: Fundamentals, Space Planning, Introduction to Textiles & Materials) - offered fall only
  • Color Workshop (No Prerequisite) - offered fall, spring and summer
  • Drawing for Interiors (No Prerequisite) - offered summer and fall
  • Residential Decorating (Last course taken for the Certificate Program. Prerequisites: all other 7 courses) - offered twice a year, schedule varies

There are a variety of non-required elective courses offered to enhance the learning process and knowledge of the interior decorating field.

Class handouts and some materials are included in the course fees. Some classes may require the purchase of books or other materials. Students can complete the program at their own pace and are encouraged to not take more than a few classes at the same time.   Classes are offered in the evening; however, occasionally, a class may be held in the day-time or on a Saturday.  Certain day-time field trips are required.  Course offerings vary per semester and not all courses are offered every semester.  Students should refer to the course descriptions and required prerequisites before registering for a course. 

2014 Spring Course Schedule

Residential Decorating*

Decorating for others is the focus of this course, along with space planning and budget practicalities for those who live in and use the space. Interviewing clients and current design trends in furniture, color and fabrics are also covered.

Prerequisites: Interior Decorating Fundamentals, Space Planning, Introduction to Textiles & Materials, Lighting

One six hour daytime field trip will be scheduled in lieu of two evening sessions.

Kitchen and Bath Design - CANCELLED

An introductory course to the world of kitchen and bath design. This class will explore the major components of the kitchen and bathroom including cabinetry, countertops, appliances, fixtures and fittings, as well as the core design and space planning elements of successful kitchen and bath design.

No prerequisites.

2014 Summer Course Schedule

Fundamentals of Interior Decorating

Introduction to the field and the first course taken for the certificate program. Course covers styles, furniture arrangement and construction, color, flooring, window treatments and lighting.

Color Workshop

Comprehensive hands-on workshop that investigates color theory, pigments, application of materials and appropriate use of color.  Students will learn how to specify color needs to manufacturers, architects, and craftsmen.  Assignments are designed to explore aspects of color interaction and to solve site-specific color problems.

No prerequisites.

Drawing for Interiors

This is a drawing class tailored to the needs of interior decorating students. The first part of the class will use still-life objects and pieces of furniture to investigate the issues of composition, proportion, and the construction of fundamental volumetric forms. The second part of the class will focus on the creation of spatial illusions using perspective and other design principles. The goal of the class is to better understand how a three-dimensional space is translated into a two-dimensional representation.

No prerequisites.

The Decorating Business

Introduction to organizing and managing a decorating business, from initial consultation to project completion. Course will also explore employment opportunities. No previous business experience needed. Not required for certificate. Please bring lunch.

No prerequisites.

Registrations are accepted on a first-paid, first-served basis. Non-credit courses must be paid in full at time of registration.

Early registration is recommended as most courses have limited enrollment and reach capacity quickly.

Students will receive confirmation of payment, course details and a parking permit approximately two weeks prior to the start of each class.

REFUND POLICY - In the event a course is canceled by the University, every attempt will be made to enroll you in another course or a full refund will be issued. Any cancellations made by the student must be made at least five business days before the start of class or a refund will not be granted.  Please note that if you register for a course, and you do not attend, you are still responsible for the payment.
